Skypixs view of Ontonagon    ...scroll down to share comments

Our Ontonagon week spotlight has attracted some great shots around the Village, but none as all inclusive as this sky shot from Rick Anderson of Skypixs. Wonder if there are any of our viewers who attended that school in the lower left of the picture?

We had a request to spotlight Iron Mountain-Crystal Falls next week. Anybody have any shots to share? For your uploading ID see the Gallery instructions.

I hear Toivo is spending some extra time around Winnipeg. Hopefully we'll see him back in the saddle on Monday. Have a good weekend!

Perhaps by chance do you mean the Iron River-Crystal Falls area? Just curious...

What ever happened to George Hite? Haven't heard from him in a long time.

To ja in Virginia:

1. It gets really cold there.

2. You cannot see mosquitoes and black flies on a digital picture.

3. Bring your own money; there is little up there.

Yes, I would love to see the Iron Mountain, Crystal Falls, Iron River area featured. We took our family there for summer vacations for many years. Spent a lot of time on Runkle Lake and Buck Lake. Children are grown now...but they still talk of their favorite vacations to that "most beautiful" area of the state. What wonderful memories we will always have of being in the U.P. in the summer.

I made a trip to the Social Security office, today, and they wanted to see my birth certificate. They looked at me funny when I said I was born in a town called Ontonagon. Believe it or not, I found the original, from 1941. Now let's see what those skeptics will have to say!

Anybody know anything about all those baby blue boxcars parked near the river?

By DS, WI on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 02:11 am:

JohnK, The boxcars are stored in the Ontonagon
yard. The railroad is the Escanaba & Lake
Superior. When they are needed to haul product
from the Smurfit Stone mill to other states they
will be brought across the river and loaded. From
there they will leave the UP via Rockland,
Channing, and Iron Mountain. They eventually make
their way back to Ontonagon but it's a long trip
so they keep an extra supply of cars on hand to
meet the needs of the mill.

To ja,

It gets REALLY REALLY cold here.
There is LOTS AND LOTS of SNOW here.
Winter lasts from end of October to end of April.
Summer could be hot/humid.
Summer could be cold/wet.
Mosquito's and Black flies!!!!!
Summer is beautiful.
Fall is beautiful.
Winter is beautiful.
Spring is beautiful.
Life is pretty slow paced.
Hope you have a good income or a very marketable skill or are creative about ways to support yourself, cause there aren't a lot of choices for
high wage employment.
The people are FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Lots of creative artistic people around here.
Best darn place to live!
You either love it or you don't.

I look forward to the spotlight on Iron Mountain and Crystal Falls and Iron River, I am a loyal Mountainier, dislocated Yooper who did 9 1/2 yrs at Da Tech and returns home more often through a web sight than a highway. I am currently working for our favorite uncle over here in Kosovo but will be going back to germany soon to serve out a year or two mobilization. I check this sight as often as I can, it helps. Thanks to all of the great folks that make it possible to journey home in my mind when my mind is very far away.

pcm, you have it just about right.....nice place to raise a family but without income it can be difficult.....good luck, ja.

Sean, George is just fine and ready to take off again (he didn't make it back by the 4th as he'd planned).

We asked about him at the General Store in Eagle Harbor or our way through last week (GREAT place, excellent sandwiches, and really nice people)
