Toivo, calling it a day near Montreal on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 03:30 am:

Back in Keweenaw on Thursday it was a busy place up at Jacob's Falls, as the Moyle crew topped off the new monastery of the Society of St. John. Charlie and Edie popped up from Eagle River and grabbed some shots for the Pasty Cam. If you click the lower pictures, a bigger one will display, to see the construction up close.

There's an open house planned for August sometime, but I'm sure the Jampot will be opening for the summer beginning next week. I understand the monks have been real supportive of Pasty Central and Still Waters over the years.

Meanwhile out here on the road my North American geography lesson continues. Never realized that Montreal is in Quebec - - not the city, but the province. Quebec, Quebec is like New York, New York. Learn something new every day.

Where has this week gone? Guess I get another weekend off. See you next month.

I've already had a Jampot hermit cookie and truffles! My husband was there a week ago.

Does anybody remember the motel that was at Jacobs Falls in the late 50s? What happened to it and where did the owners go?

By dave, in yellow jacket on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 10:09 am:

A good portion of the motel and rooms where destroyed when the jacobs falls overflowed in the mid or late 60's. It also washed the road away. I was there to see it, when I was just a kid.

I beleived the Dow family owned the property at one time and two of the members are living in Mohawk and I beleive in Hancock respectively.

Holy Wah! Imagine that being built there!! Should be something to see, that's for sure. Now, can someone tell me, where exactly has this been built in relation to the falls? Is it across the road, where the motel used to be?

By J, Illinois on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 11:42 am:

It's on the opposite side of the road from the Jam Pot as the road curves heading north to Copper Harbor, close to the water front, it's quite a site to behold when you come around the corner heading north after stopping at the Jam Pot for some jam and goodies. It's a beautiful building! The architect should get an award for it!

A Sunday service is held at the monastery--can't recall the time, but there is a Vesper service at 5pm on Saturdays. I understand the Brothers are happy to welcome visitors.

By Liz Boorman Benson, Idaho on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 02:13 pm:

The Bausano Family had the rock shop and motel that was washed away. Tony has Copper World as featured on this site. Mike has the Calumet Merc next door. Young Mr. Anderson, photo man for this site in the past, is also at Copper World.

That area (and all of Lake Superior territory for that matter), FEELS blessed. Walking those shores, you just know you are in the company of Holiness.

By Brian Thomas on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 03:06 pm:

I remember when the motel washed away.....that was quite a scene afterwards. Hey Charlie, do you know my cousin Bonnie Baril? She has the North Country Craft shop in Eagle River. If you're ever in there say Hi from me.

By T.R. in Florida on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 03:40 pm:

Say hi to Bonnie Baril from her cousin TR down here in Florida also. We will be in the Copper Country for the 4th of July. It has been 12 years since I have been back and I can hardly wait. I will be heading for the jampot in search of some thimbleberry jam. Will have to pick up several sacks of Trenary toast to go along with it !!!

By The Monks, Jacob's Falls on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 06:55 pm:

The jampot is Open for the season. When you get back to the UP Toivo, you'll have to stop in the Jampot and get a few treats, on us! Hermit cookies do make good travel companions and we DO ship to Canada (although there is a duty fee).
Our Weekend services are open to the Public: Vespers on Saturday evening at 5:30pm
Matins on Sunday morning at 7:00 am
Divine Liturgy on Sunday at 10:00 am

The Jampot is great, imagine my surprise
when we walked into the shop for the first
time and found monks serving us. I had no
idea about them at the time. It was the first
U.P trip to Copper Falls.

By Randy Lower WI on Sunday, June 1, 2003 - 02:44 pm:

To the Monks of the U.P.
I wish you all the best with the new monastery. It sure will bring more visitors to that area just to see it and will bring God's message to more people. I remember my first visit and how greatfull I was to have been hungry and stopped by divine curiosity. I was not only fed but, fed with the word. It was interesting to know that a business can be run while serving the community while serving God and humanity. Opened my eyes! Thanks! Keep it going God!
