Therese Dimet has provided us with some old-time U.P. logging photos in recent days, but this week's shoebox memory deals with quite a different subject. Daughter-in-law Carol snapped this photo back in 2000 at the Dimet's 50th anniversary. The cardboard cutouts are dressed for the celebration, and Jean especially tries hard to match the somber expression he had on such a serious occasion. Fifty years later they were still holding hands.

As I mentioned in yesterday's Cam Notes, Edie and I attended the wedding of Steve and Mandy (Utecht) Seegers in Oshkosh, Wisconsin this weekend. Today we drive up to Escanaba for the wedding of Andy Ewert and Kelly Pinar. Andy has appeared on the Pasty Cam several times in the last 6 years, as one of the Keweenaw's most eligible bachelors. We wish Andy and Kelly the best as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

Andy
By the way, Toivo is still out thrashing around in the north Atlantic somewhere, as his adventures take him to Newfoundland. Hopefully well get an update on Tuesday when our weekday Cam editor resumes his reports.

Could Toivo be Andy Ewert?

By Missin the UP from NJ on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 11:24 am:

Good Morning from rainy, chilly Northern New Jersey. We usually have winter, then HOT summer here. So, I am actually savoring the chill! And we are known as the Garden State. BELIEVE IT OR NOT! Because of the rain, we will have spectacular blooms, starting already.
Toivo, great picture! Hope you are getting some much needed rest for your continued journey. I so admire your pioneer spirit. Being Memorial weekend makes me think you are creating a fascinating family history for your future generations. What tales they will tell of "Toivo of Toivola and his Travels at the Beginning of the 2nd Millenium"! Stay well!

Hi there, Missin the UP from NJ... Where in Jersey are you from?

By Missin the UP from NJ on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 07:40 pm:

Alex, Are you familiar with NJ? I'm from (what they call out here) a Borough called Ringwood. Parts of it remind me of the UP.
We have NJ's State Botanical Gardens in our Boro. I walk there and hike. I've often said it's the reason I haven't run screaming from this state! It's a beautiful park and has a mansion on the grounds called Skylands. The person who last owned the land before it was acquired by the state, collected trees and plants from all over the world. So we have a rich heritage in that. And then there's all the iron mining history which made me feel more at home. (I grew up in Iron River) Not to mention all the sites connected to the American Revolution! BUT I STILL MISS THE UP!
OH- and what I logged back on to check, I think I erred in saying this is the beginning of the 2nd millenium, in ref. to my above message. This is the beginning of the 3rd, right? Now, I'm confused!

Hi NJ...Ringwood is the site of Thomas Edison's famous iron mining venture. We lived in Midland Park about 30 years ago..Took week end drives out thru Pompton Lakes and Franklin Lakes up to Ringwood..it is a very picturesque area.

A question for all you local pasty cam addicts...

Curious if anyone rents and sets up party tents/canopy up in that neck of the woods. Like the one in this picture...
tent
Having a get together while we're up for our annual visit this summer, and thought it might not be a bad idea to rent one for the party, in case of rain.
A thought just occured !!... Wonder if anyone rents "screened in" tents ?

By Jo Ann Hancock on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 10:36 pm:

Trapped - Not in the UP....Superior Rent-All and Sales in Houghton has all kinds of tents etc. Try them......906-482-8080.

By dlp in Painesdale on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 10:44 pm:

What part of the UP do you refer to as "neck of the woods"? If you mean the Copper Country, try Superior Rent All & Sales in Houghton or MTU for canvas tents. Get one with mosquito netting, the bugs are making their debut lately.

By pcm on Monday, May 26, 2003 - 12:43 am:

You can rent a tent, but most of us up here in " this neck of the woods" go to a STate Park like Mcleans, Twin Lakes, or Fort Wilkins and rent a pavillion so we can have Shelter, fire place, rest facilities, great view, and plenty of stuff for kids to do. By the way the ticks are really out and about big time. Never seen so many everywhere.

I just wanted to say congrads to Christy and Patrick on their wedding today (Sunday). It was a very stressful wedding since we had to move the wedding to a new location about 20 mins after it should've started. Everything went great after the 2 hour delay from moving the location. Things don't always go as planned.

Guess I was wrong about Andy. That will teach me to read the whole story.

where everyone is from.

By Will, MI on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 09:10 am:

Wish I could help...I own a party and tent rental business, but am trapped down here in SE Michigan. If anyone is interested "up there", I am interested in selling the business. I just don't have time to run it and spend time with my daughter.
