From one of the many parades in the Copper Country a few years back, courtesy of Roger Janke. I did a little Google search for Bosch on site:pasty.com and found the name has surfaced in more than a dozen daily Cam Notes. Obviously a popular brand in its day.

Toivo emailed me with his explanation for the delay in updating his travel journal. Said he ran out of galvanized sheet metal for the license plates back in Pennsylvania, finally found some up in Vermont, and spent most of the weekend making the states he missed. Tomorrow will be Day 70 of his travels, as he completes the lower 48. Will he sell the old beater and fly to Alaska? Or will he take his trek across Canada? Stay tuned!

"Takin a day off to make license plates"??? - and that's all he's got to say about NH? Hrmpf;-) (Got friends there)

Ha ha Toivo,
Truly an example of Finn yooper humor.

But glad to see you're alive and well. Will you be home for Bridgefest????

Do (m)any of you recall the giant-size mobile Bosch beer case from Copper Country parades of the 1960s....seemingly a mainstay of the Tech Hobo Parades, among others??

Poor, poor Toivo. He ran out of material to make new plates. Hmm let's see how can we help? Well I would think it is a real safe bet that if he visited any off campus college housing there would be many an empty beer, er I mean pop, can just waiting to be pounded into a plate. There are colleges out in NH right? ( My humble apologies to any NH residents.) BETTER YET! Perhaps if you visited one of "them thar" dept. of corrections facilities you could ask for a few blank plates since I think the inmates, er residents, have Sunday's off and thus there may be some unused ones hanging around. Either way good to see you back posting Toivo! God's speed for the rest of your trip.

"busch or bosch, we all agree,
it's the best beer in the whole UP"

the little pint 'throw-aways' were the best.

So Toive's real name is a secret and he is actually a nice guy...ha ha...I'm disappointed...

By *&* MI on Sunday, May 18, 2003 - 08:04 pm:

Photo is from 1949. Bosch beer started in 1874 in Lake Linden, MI. 1874 + 75 = 1949
Bosch started in Houghton MI in 1934 closed down in 1973!
As for the year of the car--looks like a '36 Chev.

Well... I am still looking forward to being the FIRST to get the Toivo License Plate T-Shirt! He promised, and his secret message says he's a nice guy, so we'll see! (Smirk).

ts: you hit it right on the head. The float was built in a grage next to the brewery in Houghton for I believe a Copper Country homecomming or celebration of some sort I don't recall exactly what it was called. The day of the parade in Calumet it poured rain and ruined most of the floats. Thie pix must have been taken before the rain.

Toivo needs to be very careful when he says "haha" to New Hampshire. I lived there and my brother does still. When those folks say "Live Free or Die", it ain't just a hidden message. Take care Toivo and linger not too long with folks whose sense of humor is only matched by their ability to pick you off at 300 plus meters if they think you "dissed' themn. Retreat quickly to Ben and Jerry's where the "fudgies" will shield you from the wrath of the Granite State. Vermont is for woosies...NH is for the alternative....Live Free or Die....
