Toivo, visiting upstate NY on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 04:35 am:

Mr. Taka, you've done it again, seeing life in the U.P. in a way which makes us homesick. I want to cruise up College Avenue, cross that bridge, up Quincy Hill, and drive all the way to Bete Grise and fall flat on my face in Superior's icy water. Then warm up in a sauna and do it all again.

Best wishes for your trip back to Japan. (I understand Taka sold his car to buy the plane ticket.)

Meanwhile on my trip, I've taken a turn see the northern part of the Empire State. Quite a skyline in Albany, another state capitol to notch on my belt. Promise I'll get the travel diary caught up today.

By Dick, Fl on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 06:48 am:

Taka, Best of everything to you on your return to your home. Please keep in touch through Pasty.com and keep the pictures coming. I've never been to Japan and would love to see your pictures from there.

By Alan, Kansas City, MO on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 07:48 am:

Maybe Taka can create a "sushi.net" site, and help us see and understand Japan and Japanese culture, just as he has helped us see Houghton and local environs?

What about it Taka?

By Melissa, Lansing, MI on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 07:50 am:

Best of luck to you Taka! Did you take this picture from the MEEM, or maybe the admin building on campus? It's a great shot!

By Carole on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 07:54 am:

Taka, best of luck to you for the future. Please keep in touch with your 'pasty' family. You will be greatly missed.

By Jo, Eau Claire, WI on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 10:39 am:

There have been wonderful pictures on this site. As a parent of an engineering student at MTU who has just finished his freshman year, I have found this site to be very welcoming and informative. By the way, I couldn't resist ordering the wonderful pasty delights. For those of you interested in pictures of Japan, there is an MTU graduate who has a website at: http://www.sushicam.com/. He has lived in Japan as an environmental engineer for a few of years. He does a good job of informing the world of the sites and culture of Japan.

I think Toivo actually snuck home for that sauna and that is why we haven't heard more about his adventures lately. I think he's taking that cool dip in "Bete Grise" right now.

By Marsha, Genesee on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 01:05 pm:

A week without Taka is like a week without Mr. Rogers! We'll miss you, but hope to hear from you lots by photos and by messages.

By Frank, St. Charles IL on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 01:37 pm:

Taka, thanks for all your pix--past, present, and future. Keep the images in your heart and mind, and the camera will find them.

Best wishes to you in all you do.

Peace...

By Jim, Twin Cities on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 02:24 pm:

Taka,

Bon voyage and good luck. You will be missed but you have left a part of yourself here in your art. Please keep in touch and let us know how things are going. I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut (or should it be five bucks to a pasty?) that photography or something else that capitalizes on that great artistic eye that you have, will always be a part of your life. If I'm right, please keep on sharing it with us.

Thanks.

By Sarah, St. Clair Shores, MI on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 02:59 pm:

Thanks for sharing your immense talent with all of us. We will miss you!

Say "hello" to Japan for all of us Pasty-Camers!

Wishing you well and much success.

By JRM, WA on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 05:34 pm:

Taka - Blessings to you as you leave the Copper Country. Thank you for sharing your talents with us all. Is this shot taken from the top of the Ad Building? I worked on the 2nd floor for a few years and the view was much the same, only from a little lower perspective. Fun to see this familiar view on my computer screen, rather than from the skinny Ad Building windows!

By upper michigan on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 07:34 pm:

toivo, you promised and the day for some of us is just about over. Taka, all the best to you. Good luck in your future, I know you will be great in what ever you do!

Taka, YOU ARE THE MAN...........!!!!!!!

Keep that wonderful eye roving and send us some of your delights. You may be temporarily elsewhere, but you are never far from our thoughts.

Regards,

Taka, Peace and best wishes in your future! Good eye with the camera. Travel well, and keep from harm's way. As a fellow MTU student, I look forward to the day I graduate.

Hmmm looks to me as if this pic was taken from a high point near Chutes and Ladders? Anyone going to divulge the secret? Great shot!

Toivo, Did you fall asleep??

By Bee..FL on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 11:35 pm:

What a shot! I kept the last night bridge picture as my wall paper for months, just changing it recently for a beautiful shot of of ending winter and forth coming spring (with a little left-over snow...but will have to store this gorgeous shot for a future wallpaper enjoyment. Will soon be returning to Kewanee, early June and can't wait.

By eyes wide shut on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 11:52 am:

Michele, LL,
If you look at lower left corner of picture, that is
Wells Fargo branch bank on College Ave. Also note the College Motel's sign to the right of the street. This is definately corner of Townsend Drive going onto College Ave. It looks like it is from some where up in the AD Building.

By dees,hoton on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 01:01 pm:

The pic was taken from the top floor of the ME building

By Ned, Kingsford. on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 09:27 pm:

No way was that pic taken from the ME-EM building. It is too far to the left of the College Ave centerline.

By Alan, Kansas City, MO on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 09:27 am:

It could possibly have been taken from one of the extreme south windows on the west side of ME-EM bldg. If you open a new browser window, then go to this link:
http://www.admin.mtu.edu/urel/cams/view/large.html

then scroll this page up and compare the two shots, one can imagine that the pic was taken from about the same height, but with more of a telephoto lens. I vote that it was likely from ME-EM

By D.Carlson,Il on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 09:46 am:

Taka,
Thank You for sharing. I wish You all the best the future has to offer.

By JRM. WA on Sunday, May 18, 2003 - 05:17 pm:

Dees, Hoton and Alan from Kansas: I beg to differ. Having spent 5 years working at various desks located approximately 12 feet from the windows which afford this very view, I have to offer again my judgement that this picture was indeed taken from somewhere high up in or on the Ad Building. If you imagine you are the photographer and were to look straight down from the viewfinder, you would be looking at the mailroom delivery entrance. If you happen to be in Houghton, take a run up to the 5th floor of the Ad Blding - you'll see what I mean! Wish I was there! (Though not necessarily in the Ad Building :-)

Taka - are you out there? Can you settle this for us?

By taka @ japan on Sunday, May 18, 2003 - 11:18 pm:

I took this photo from the 11th floor of MEEM one day before I left Houghton (5/13).
I am using the slowest modem in the world now. I apologize that I cannot respond to peoplefs questions as often as before. Regard.

By JRM, WA on Monday, May 19, 2003 - 10:36 am:

Thanks, Taka for clearing that up. The perspective does look higher than the 5 floors of the Ad Building. A 15 year absence has dimmed the memory. I should know better than to question the MEEM guys.

By Wendy, Lake Linden MI. on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 - 07:56 am:
