Toivo, camped at Hunt Valley, MD on Thursday, May 8, 2003 - 01:26 am:

Some pretty amazing detail in this shot from Leslie at the Northern Lights Lodge in Cadillac. Of course out here on the eastern seaboard where my travels have led, the vegetation is months ahead of Northern Michigan. But I know the folks back home must be witnessing a whole lot of new life as the last of the snow disappears in the woods. Wonder if the "Laurium Glacier" is gone yet?

I wore out another pair of tennis shoes with all my sightseeing. After wandering for miles around the nation's capitol, walked around the inner harbor at Baltimore, and the big fish market. Looking forward to heading north, maybe making it to Gettysburg later Thursday.
Good night from Maryland and good morning from da U.P. trip notes md

What a pleasing picture of pitcher plants. WOW

By EM,MI on Thursday, May 8, 2003 - 08:23 am:

The Laurium Glacier is still with us.

I think toivo is playing with us, looking at the most recent addition of letters to his message I bet he going to finnish with something like "nice guy"

I left my heart in the U.P.
Along the banks of a river there
Where there's no one else around
The woods's the only sound
And Gitchee Gumee waves at me...

Beautiful photo of the Pitcher Plant...looks like you've finally "made it to the BIG TIME." Would love to see some shots of morels!

Hey Toivo,

In your trip notes you commented about the various dialects across the states. In my opinion, that is the charming part of our culture.

My Dad left the U.P in 1921 and until the day he died in 1969 he spoke the yooper dialect with his Youse guys, dem, dat, and eh? He prided himself in being able to understand and speak about 5 or 6 different languages, self taught of course.

Correction to the above message:

My Dad returned to da UP in 1928 and left again in 1933, during which time I was born. That of course entitled me to be a Yooper.( I still have family in Lake Linden, Dollar Bay, L'Anse)

Beautiful plant and picture. Is it "blooming"
now or is this from another time? I can't say I
recalled seeing one of these before. Is it
strickly a northern plant? Any help is
appreciated.

By Nita, NorthwesternCA on Thursday, May 8, 2003 - 10:12 pm:

Dave the River Slave;

There are Pitcher plants in northwestern California too. A strikingly beautiful plant to be sure. Here in CA we don't have snow melting around the plants however.

As of 5/8 Toivo's cryptic message reads:
"Toivo's real name is a secret. He is actually
an ea…(possible ending…"an eater of pastys"
or would it be pasties in the plural?)
We eagerly await the final reports of his epic
journey.

Minnesota Wild 4-2 over Vancouver in Game
7 (11:45 p.m. CST). Anyone have any good
pond/lake hockey photos for the pastycam?
Old ones?

By Rivera on Friday, May 9, 2003 - 06:22 am:

Ahh, indeed the year of the upset in the good old Campbell (I mean Western) Conference of the venerable NH of L. Kudos to the Wild, now if they would just change their name to a noun instead of an adjective, things would be fine. Maybe they should trade with the Timberwolves, that is much more a hockey moniker.
