Just smashed my first mosquito of the
season here in Missouri. Heavy storms once
again hit our fair state with tornados sighted
just north of the fair city of Owensville near
Drake and Mt. Sterling. Green skies over the
'ville and circling winds overhead but luckily
none touched down here. Reports of 4-inch
hail stones (baseballs?) in Union (30 miles
away) and 1.75-inches around here (golf
balls?). Hope the weather up north is more
hospitable. If anyone is into whitewater
boating, the St. Francis River south of St.
Louis will be pumping away with heavy rains
near Fredricktown, Ironton, Farmington and
points all around.

P.S. Lovely photograph of the sunset!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Mark Turner, Illinois on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 06:32 am:

It is great to see a picture from my hometown, Ontonagon! This is a light tower leading into the harbor, I know a lot of people that used to hang out there a lot during the summer. It is a peaceful and tranquil place to take in the lake and watch the sunset.

I hope this one makes the calendar.

By ShawnR, GR MI on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 08:19 am:

I love this picture! I particularly love the sliver of the sun on the right-hand side. Good job Z-Man!

Every day there's a great photo on this web site, but every once in a while there's one that really takes my breath away. Today's photo is one of those.

By Dave, PA on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 12:38 pm:

Toivo - When you get up to Philly stop in and see me. Always enjoy the pasty cam and I see you're only 4 hours from here.

By Roundsy on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 12:39 pm:

Makes me homesick looking at that picture. Yes, I'm from Ontonagon and miss the heck out of it! Makes a guy start thinking back to the good ol' days, oh and you can bet your sweet little bippy those boys have a beer in their hand!! That's quite a long walk on them rocks out to the end of the pier carrying 5 cases of beer!

By Rivera on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 01:10 pm:

Ahh, indeed nothing like an ice cold Mountain Dew and an aromatic Marlboro Light to amplify the camaradarie of said vigilantes (perhaps fishermen?) atop said breakwall.

By Sven on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 01:27 pm:

I've watched many sunsets growing up in Ontonagon. It's one of the first things that you realize you took for granted when you move away. I can't think of many things better. Now when I go home to see my parents. I'll usually race up from Green Bay as fast as I can, just to see that big old sun cool itself off in that ice cold lake they call Gitchee Gumee.

By Mike B, Pittsburgh, wishin I was still in the Yoop on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 01:47 pm:

Toivo,
Are you taking the Penna Turnpike on through Ohio and north into MI on your return trip or are you going north through Penna/NY State and into Canada? The trip through Niagra/Canada/Sault Ste Marie is supposed to be real nice. A little pricey due to gasoline costs but nice nontheless.

By Lori in Wisconsin on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 02:06 pm:

Gorgeous picture! A definite WOW! Added it to my background as soon as I saw it. My hometown was the L'Anse/Pelkie area. I would love to see some current shots of the area sometime.

By Troll Diva on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 02:13 pm:

What a great picture! Looks like it should be a postcard!!

By Svens brother-in-las on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 03:14 pm:

I have had a few with Sven looking at Gitchee...and everytime I see it, it reminds me of the summers I spent living in those waters. Nothing like sitting on the beach with a few friends...

Pictures like this one make me SICK! (That I'm not back in the UP!) OH, how I miss it!

To Dave the river slave etal:
I hope that you and yours are safe after the nasty weather in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois.
By the way. Great photo!!!!!!!!!!

By Dave the River Slave in Missouri on Thursday, May 8, 2003 - 01:35 am:

Hey Troll…thanks for the well wishes. Spent
the day shooting photographs of people who
got blasted by storms in our area. But, it was
NOTHING like what they went through down
south in Pierce City, Mo., or Camdenton
(made national news, eh?…several hours
away). Whole downtoown areas down south
that got wiped out! We've been LUCKY. A lot of
straight-line winds and some rotation action.
Shot pics at several places today that lost 150
to 200-year-old oaks. Expecting another batch
of bad weather again on Thursday…as long
as we don't have green skies we're okay!!

By Fran from Japan, MO on Thursday, May 8, 2003 - 01:46 am:

Hello Dave (the River Slave)

Where are you? I live about 15 miles south of Owensville and our power finally went back on at 5 Wednesday evening. My husband and I are daily visitors to Pasty Central and regulars in Calumet whenever we get the chance, summer or winter.

Can't wait to get back!

By Dave the River Slave Mo. on Thursday, May 8, 2003 - 05:37 pm:

Hey Fran from Japan (Jay-Pan)! I'm right here
in the 'ville of Owens. Camped and
backpacked Isle Royale years ago and did the
Sault Sainte Marie bit with family (mom is from
Saginaw) as a youngster.
How much storm damage down Japan way?
Parts east of Gerald got hammered pretty hard
on Shotwell Road. Was out yesterday on a
photographic safari of the area. Must have
been bad down Route T (toward Tea) as well.
Take care Fran. This website is a blast to look
at — an old friend of mine turned me on to it.
