Charlie at Pasty Central on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 07:38 am:

In today's first photo, Dolly Johnson looks a bit like Vanna White awarding the grand prize to Kenny Passanen. Actually, Dolly and a few of the residents are admiring the new van which Pasty Central visitors helped to make possible. We want to send a sincere 'Thank you' to all who had a part in this project. Also a big thank-you to the Calumet Theatre for the benefit concert last night with the Keweenaw Swing Band. Lot's of excitement here in the Copper Country.

The second picture is another shot from Taka Aoki, out by Redridge, near the spot where yesterday's Pasty Cam was featured. Taka's camera is on the mend, after a watery mishap earlier this week.

And an interesting week it has been, to see all of the comments from visitors enjoying a glimpse of life in the U.P. with us. Our travelling Toivo has bogged down in South Carolina, taking a break from his whirlwind tour of the 50 states. Rumor has it that Toivo now intends to cross from Maine into Canada, visiting each Province, aiming to reach Alaska before Memorial Day.

By the way, which would you prefer for this week's WOW?

Gee I wonder if anyone else has seen the hidden message in Toivo's postings each day????Pretty cute I must say.

By JCW on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 09:45 am:

Thursday May 1, Friday May 2, Saturday May 1...how can that be??????

By taka @ mtu on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:16 am:

Squirrels! Please!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:29 am:

Thanks for the heads up, JCW. Saturday is now officially the 3rd.

By Nadine/Vermont on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:36 am:

If Toivo is going to make it to New England he should stop in Vermont. It's beautiful! Much like the U.P. but more mountains. We also have Lake Champlain which some like to think of as the fifth Great Lake (not my idea). As a former Yooper I have to say that Lake Superior is "superior".
Seriously Toivo, if you are coming this way please let us know!

By Kevin K. Lodi,Ca on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:56 am:

Good Morning to Alice in Ventura, Ca and Kevin in S.F. Ca. They didn't post the photo's until early U.P.time this morning, cheated us west coast fans out of the first look.

Friday (Redridge), has my vote.

By Nadine/Vermont on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 12:01 pm:

Correction!
I referred to the fact that some folks like to think of Lake Champain as the fifth great lake. I meant to say SIXTH! Sorry!

I still think Toivo should come to Vermont.

By Bob, Farmington Hills, MI on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 12:21 pm:

Redridge for the WOW

By cak on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 12:35 pm:

I vote for the squirrel, he/she is sooooooo cute and full of life and ready for spring and summer. My second choice is Redridge and will have to see it when up the second week in June.

By Mary on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 12:44 pm:

I had to LOL at Charlie's comment...

I thought the same thing when I looked at the picture. Maybe she could get a job on The Price is Right. She looks quite stylish! :)

By ILMHitCC on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 12:44 pm:

Sunset for WOW! It makes it feel like summer is coming.

By Mary on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 01:11 pm:

I forgot to vote for the WOW....
It's a tough decision. All three are good photos, but I'm choosing the squirrel, because we haven't had too many WOW's of creatures!
I do love the sunset picture too, unbelievable how much it looks like a shot I took while vacationing in Florida's Gulf area! Here's a copy of my photo:

Florida sunset

Five years ago, when I viewed the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico for the first times, I wasn't all that impressed, because when you look out over Lake Superior, you see the same vastness. We are truly blessed to live in the U.P.

Does Kenny Passanen want to buy a vowel or a pasty?

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 01:25 pm:

Picture #3 is the WOW of the week I think! WOW! :)

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

Right you are Kevin, in Lodi. I actually looked last night! Is the rain gone up there? The sun just came out here after pouring for a about a day.

By Kevin K. Lodi,Ca on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 02:29 pm:

I vote for Redridge.

The squirrel!!

By IN on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 05:19 pm:

The water. I can see squirrels in Indiana. :-)

By pk, West Bend, WI on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 06:04 pm:

Redridge. The water runs this high only once a year.

By darrell oinas/dewitt michigan on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 06:43 pm:

I have to vote for the sunset as they are the best sunsets in the entire state and it looks as though I am going to be home in calumet for a week in june and will enjoy every sunset and sunrise for an entire week, so much to see and so much to do the only time I will be at the hotel is to sleep, I wonder who has the best fish fry on fridays, it youse to be the dreamland in by rabbit bay or the place near lake linden with the bowling ally, anyhow it will be my first return home in over 25 years. I hope it hasent changed to much.

By Patt in mid Mich on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 09:28 pm:

I vote for the water. This sight is unique to the UP, squirrels aren't, susnsets aren't but high waters at that spot are

By Ken from da UP on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:18 pm:

I like the high water for da WOW, but Mimi likes da rodent. Ok, da cute squirrel. :o)

By RCW $ BAY on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:28 pm:

Hey Ken, are you picking up the hidden message in Toivo's posts. Seems no one has noticed but me??

By EM,MI on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:50 pm:

If you check Thursday's Cam you will see that quiet a few have picked up on Toivo's hidden message.

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 10:57 pm:

Bob, several days ago someone noticed Toivo's hidden message and there were several comments about it. Am not sure what day it was.I am curious as to what it will say!!

I vote for No.3!! It is beautiful

By Debbie on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 11:09 pm:

No offense, but I notice that you all still have no leaves on your trees up there in the UP. When do y'all get leaves and when does Spring arrive? Wow, that is strange for a Southerner to understand.

By Deb yet again on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 11:11 pm:

P.S. My vote is for the sunset - very awesome!!!!

By lk, MI on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 11:21 pm:

The water is a neat and fitting WOW for this time of year. The squirrel?..Nah. They're a dime a dozen up here in the U.P.!

By RCW $ BAY on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 11:24 pm:

Ok Fran & Em, Thank. I somehow missed that Thursday. It will be interesting to see the finished sentence!!

By Bob, Farmington Hills on Saturday, May 3, 2003 - 11:41 pm:

I'm sorry you didn't put Taka"s shot of Jacob Falls in the running for the WOW of the week

By Russ E. St. Clair county MI on Sunday, May 4, 2003 - 12:01 am:

Hey Nadine/Vermont! did you forget our SIXTH Great Lake? ----Lake St. Clair which is just down the road from me here!
My vote would be the rushing water! We see those squirrels here in our yard, and we see similiar SUNRISE here on Lake St. Clair.
Debbie/southerner: Our leaves are just about all out here in southeast Michigan. There is about a 2 weeks difference between here and the UP and we are behind 2 weeks from Ohio/ Kentucky etc. (Varies some years)

Greetings to everyone up north. Thanks for the
response on the Copper Harbor air base
(home to youthful offenders now, eh? Great
place to keep them. Little chance for escape
and all in the winter months.
Gardening season is in full swing in Missouri.
Lettuce is going great and radishes are
coming in as well. Tomatoes, squash, and
peppers are in the ground. Broccoli is forming
heads. Irises are blooming and peonies will
soon.
Hope everyone is having a good spring! (I like
the water shot…does anyone put a whitewater
boat on that???? That would make a nice
picture)

By Grizzly Adams, Calumet on Sunday, May 4, 2003 - 06:05 am:

I don't know how to cut and paste the picture into my message but my vote for WOW is the sunset.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, May 4, 2003 - 07:45 am:

Thanks for all the notes and messages about the WOW. It became a toss-up between the squirrel and the whitewater, but the scales were tilted when I looked at the computer of our pasty girl Becky, who had the furry wallpaper herself. If you're new to Pasty Central, the WOW page makes it available in larger resolutions, a new selection each week. Incredible detail in this shot by Rob Wetton.

WOW!
By the way, Becky and Bryan are flying to Salt Lake City today, as they are scheduled to move to the university there in August, for Bryan to pursue graduate studies. Becky has done a great job processing pasty orders the past couple of years, and we have less than 3 months to find her replacement. We'll have more news about this job opening in the days ahead.
By cak on Sunday, May 4, 2003 - 10:46 am:

I also have the little rodent as my wallpaper. Lately I have seen too many squished squirrels on the road, nice to see this happy little guy/girl looking perky.

By :O on Sunday, May 4, 2003 - 06:14 pm:

Dave the river slave

Braggart. You may have a longer nicer growing season, but we don't get tornado's!

By Mary Ann Gruver on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 - 06:53 am:
