Toivo, only made it as far as Gold Beach, OR on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 01:01 am:

Word from back home about possible heavy snow overnight. This pic from Tex De Graves gives you an idea of how peaceful it might look when it stops. Wonder how this will bollix George's snow depth contest over on Eagle Harbor Web?

Funny, out here on the Pacific, where it feels like a U.P. night in June (50 degrees right now), it's hard to picture the Copper Country - - unless you look at the Lift Bridge Cam. Here's the nearest Cam to where I'm beddin down.

Good night from the "Banana Belt" (southern Oregon) and good morning from the U.P.

How many of you yoopers remember the Heikki Lunta snow dance song? Looks like someone's been playing that lately.

By MKW on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 06:51 am:

AT LEAST A FOOT OF THE UGLY WHITE STUFF HERE IN DOLLAR BAY.THE METEOROLOGISTS LOCALLY WERE RIGHT FOR A CHANGE!!!!

By Charlie H. in Eagle River, MI on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 06:55 am:

Toivo,

Nice to wake up to Friday's Pasty Cam already done. A few differences to Tex's picture above: 1) The snow is a lot wetter, 2) There's more of it (heavy blanket on the trees), and 3) we probably won't see the sun this morning.

Did you pick up that mapping program? It would be good to track your progress. A tour of the whole U.S. through the eyes of a yooper must be some kind of first.

Toivo,

If you make it all the way to Florida, I just bought a new roll a duct tape. You are welcome to it if Tina didn't give yours back. I know how hard it is to live without it.

By techgrad Houghton MI on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 07:10 am:

MKW-
I agree with you on the ugly white stuff. I personally was ready for spring. But, I have to disagree about the meteorologists part. I listen to and check John D's site and he's right on the money 99% of the time.

By pikkuleipa on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 07:46 am:

Aaack....just looked at the Bridge Cam!

By Mo from Florida on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 07:49 am:

Toivo, if you check emails before you leave, stop in Trinidad just north of Eureka and Arcata, CA and take a coffee break or lunch. There is a wonderful little old restaurant right next to the dock. Great food and the view is outstanding. Eureka and Arcata are quaint little cities also if you are not in any hurry.

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 07:56 am:

Better there than here.

By Mary Lou on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 07:57 am:

Hi from Escanaba...no snow here just rain......my yard is getting green...although it could change tonight when it is suppose to get cold......so far so good....

By Proud Yooper - MI on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 08:40 am:

You have to admit the snow-covered trees do look pretty this morning. Also, the new snow covers the dirty snow banks. We have to think positive or else this snow can be very depressing when it should already be Spring-like weather here. Plus it's the good ole' Copper Country...so what do ya expect? : ) By the way that is a nice picture posted early this morn. Give me the SUN!

Another dup in posting. Second day I did that. Time to go back to bed!

By Kate, CA on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 09:49 am:

Toivo, why didn't you send a photo of the
spectacular view of the coastline from Port
Orford? It's awesome! On second thought, probably
better if you don't, there might be a mass exodus
of Yoopers to the West Coast. To Mo in Fla.,
you're right...youse guys is talkin' about my neck
of da woods now and that is a good restaurant for
lunch! Stop in the Redwood Forest too Toivo and
see the Rhododendrons and smell the wonderful
coastal air among the mighty redwoods. Try to go
to the Samoa Cookhouse for breakfast in
Eureka...served family style, all you can eat!!
Although it ain't the U.P., it's still awful
"purty" around here.

TO MIKE Transplanted Yooper. I obtained a copy of the Heikki Lunta "Snow Dance Song" and "Heikke Lunta Go Away" a year ago I was able to order them for $2.00 from WMPL, P.O. Box 547 Hancock MI 49930. If you were interested you might write them and see if more are still available. And to answer your next question I have not been playing it.

By Liz Benson, Pocatello ID on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 10:27 am:

Heikki dumped 24 inches at Grand Targhee on Wed. Oh my gosh, I'm still moving slow from all that powder skiing. Tracks covered faster than we could make them. Yes, it was the wet kind but still very movable. Forest Service shuts down skiing on April 13 @ Targhee...plently of stuff to keep us going. Of course, we call this weather Spring Time in the Tetons. Today its cold but the sky is very blue....there is hope coming your way...

By Mr. Wheatman, South end on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 12:03 pm:

Why distress about precipitation in which hegemony does not exist?? Be happy we are here in the UP and can in all sagacity empathize with the fact that snow is a possibility this time of year, but will be making a hast retreat shortly. In the meantime enjoy the picturesque effect it creates indeed, and let not your heart be troubled, spring is basically looming. Kudos to the snow.

By Grandmas Pasties, MN on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 12:11 pm:

To RJ in St Paul....
Thank goodness you weren't playing the Snow Dance Song. We lucked out here. A little ground cover is easy to swallow compared to the UP or Duluth today. Have a good one. ***** Sandy *****

By RSomero CA on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 12:37 pm:

Beautiful place there Toivo. Been through there about 1991. The Mackinze(sp)river valley reminds me of home without the snow! God's country is truly everywhere you look.

By QTip on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 12:49 pm:

Are you sure your name isn't Mr. Webster, Mr Wheatman?

By FORMER YOOPER, AZ on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 03:10 pm:

Aaahh! Twinkling morning sunlight on the freshly new fallen snow and quietly the dark trees seem to embrace it all in the fresh, non-polluted air!

By George, Cleveland on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 05:02 pm:

UPer in Cleveland needs the gazette web address, Enjoy your site very much. thanks bkahouna@aol.com

By Nita, Northwestern,CA on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 05:06 pm:

To Kate in CA,
You are so right about the Samoa Cookhouse.Great food served "Cookhouse" style. I told Toivo a couple of days ago there are lots of Finns in Humobldt County also, mostly loggers and fishermen, Bless their souls. Many good Finn families, such as Tervo, Katvala, Tonkin, Antilla,Lehto, etc.

Not a Finn but born in the UP, makes me a proud Yooper.

Heavy, wet snow sounds great right about now. We have 15% humidity with 30 mph winds coming off the desert and it's 80 deg. Yuck!! My eyes feel like hot sand. We are watching our pretty Spring flowers shriveling up already.

By ELDRED AZ on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 10:11 pm:

NO SNOW IN GREEN VALLEY AZ. TEMP THIS
AFTERNOON WAS 80 DEGREES. FLOWERS ON THE TOMATOE
PLANTS.

By Steve the Troll on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 11:15 pm:

Yea Eldred at AZ and if you liked it so much, you wouldn't be looking long and longingly at a UP website. We know............You spend much time at the AZ website.........???? Most of all...
We understand..........

By Sandee NH on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 11:37 pm:

Snow - will it ever go away? Snow relieves heat and yes, heat is quite disconcerting - BUT we up here like to ski and love cold - SO LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW - LET IT SNOW!!!!!

By Molson in Burnsville on Saturday, March 29, 2003 - 04:29 am:

To R.J. in St.Paul and Grandma's pasties. I also live here in the twin cities. Has anyone wondered what would happen to the cities if one of the UP LAKE EFFECT SNOW STORMS ever hit here, I have and I think it would shut the cities down completely. Not that we don't get storms but a real UP blow. the year before I moved down here BUMBLETOWN got over 54 inches in three and half days. I guess we can only wish,

By R.J St.Paul, MN. on Saturday, March 29, 2003 - 09:29 am:

MOLSON in BURNSVILLE: I was a little too young to remember it but Mom tells that on President's day 45 due to complications she had to go to the hospital in Laurium for the birth of my sister the C.C. was in the midst of a good storm. Bob Morrison tried to open the roads enough to get through but couldn't a second plow was called out but couldnt get through either so they had to fininsh the trip to the hospital with tobaggon and snow shoes That trip started at about Eighth and Pine. I also recall once in the late 40s having to move snow so the field would be dry enough for the fourth of July carnival at Calumet.

By Helen, MI on Saturday, March 29, 2003 - 09:55 am:

Beautiful Morning after picture. I just love it!! We sure have gotten enough snow to start next winter already!! Is spring ever going to get here and STAY?? I know it will in good time. Just hoping it would start a bit earlier this year is all. But not in da U.P.!!

By Deep in Houghton on Saturday, March 29, 2003 - 01:49 pm:

Hey Toivo - Here's another tip on a great place to eat. Stop at Crescent City just a few miles south of the Oregon border. Eat at the restaurant that is on the dock/harbor that extends way out into the ocean. Good spot to get a brunch of eggs, bacon, etc while watching pelicans diving and huge sea lions lying on the docks. They actually prevent some of the boaters from accessing their boats. We loved it when we found it a few years ago. Of course, we were new to the area and it was pretty neat. Have Fun.

By Mel in Hoton on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 - 01:52 pm:

Apologies... the snow dancing was me! Just didn't quite get enough, since it didn't snow for about a month while it was so cold. *grins*
