I've been following Pasty Central and would like you to know that it played a part in helping my son decide to attend Michigan Tech. He was looking for a school that offered a lot of adventure" and seeing all of the pictures from the surrounding area helped convince him that MTU was a great place to enjoy the outdoors. He even gave winter camping a try. He thoroughly enjoyed working on the snow statues as well.

Although my son isn't in this picture, it's a group of 15 students from Michigan Tech and 3 from Northern in Panama City Beach last week as a part of a conference with
Campus Crusade for Christ. Their group photo involved "snow statue" building abilities in the sand. Complete with sleds, shovel, snowshoes and winter clothing.

I am so glad to see so many positive young people. As a Floridian, it is good to see "Spring Breakers," doing something other than drinking and causeing problems. The majority of young people are good, and deserve much more credit.

Techies are a hoot!
That sand looks soooo wonderful!

By Troll, MICH on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 08:24 am:

I guess you can take the Yooper out of winter, but you can't take winter out of the Yooper. Thanks for this morning's smile!

By KATHY , MICHIGAN on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 08:30 am:

GREAT SHOT! DO THEY STILL CALL THE TECH STUDENTS TOOTS?

By Mary Ann , Bloomington, IN on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 08:37 am:

Hi Paul in Bloomington IN. Mary Ann in Bloomington IN. Are you the Paul K. that works with Campus Crusade and who has a wife Donna involved in Right to Life? I attend Emmanuel Baptist and know Jeff & Lisa C. and Scott and Jane M. I've met your wife through Jane. Small world. I love the U.P. If I could find a way to spend my entire summer there I would, but hey you have to work. So nice to hear your son is there and loving it.

By Dee, Lake Linden, Mi on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 08:39 am:

Do ya think they're still try'in ta thaw out from da MTU winter carnival?

By Northern Lights Lodge, Cadillac on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 08:52 am:

What a fun picture! I'll be laughing all the way to work... thanks! Now, THAT, makes a statement!

Paul K. in Bloomington, IN.

Hi! Nice to know there are other people interested in MTU who live in Bloomington. My husband and I lived in Houghton for a few years while he was finishing his undergraduate degree a couple of years ago. If you'd like to talk about the university, the area, or any general information about the place just let me know. Trust me, once you've experienced the place you'll never be the same.

By Amy, MI on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 02:29 pm:

Hello folks!
This is Amy! This is a great picture and all of you have your personalities shining! I also heard a rumor that UP Catalytic was one of the most spirited groups at Big Break!! I am glad that we (Tech Crusaders) got represented on the south side of our country and that y'all had a passion and a desire to share your life and God's love with people. And you got to share a little bit of "God's Country" with Florida!! God Bless Y'all!!

By Just Wondering, MI on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 07:25 pm:

Just wondering are these familiar people from this site? (Excerpt from Today's Soo Evening News Web page):

"PASTY SAUCE -- Move over Ben and Jerry. Here comes Toivo and Eino. Escanaba "Fudge Pasty" creators, Dennis Wiethoff, Dan Young and Tom England, display their latest Yooper invention -- Toivo & Eino's Really Secret Pasty Sauce. The new Yooper sauce -- which the inventors tout as "smooth, not chunky like taco sauce, and thicker than ketchup but with a kick" -- is distributed exclusively throughout the U.P. by Jilbert's Dairy"

By Robert, CO on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 08:58 pm:

I saw the Pasty Sauce ad on The Evening News web site as well; has anybody tried it? It sounds intriguing. Maybe Pasty Central will offer to sell a bottle with pasty orders in the future....

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 09:08 pm:

Guess what? If you click on the link at the bottom of this page which says "Order Now", you will notice we do have Toivo and Eino's Really Secret Pasty Sauce available with your pasty order which can ship next week.

We just finished off our first bottle, and I must say it is delicious. I have to confess for years I have leaned toward gravy on my pasty. (My wife has always loved ketchup, so you might say we are a "mixed marriage"). But Toivo and Eino's Sauce is so good... like my old Uncle Eddie would say, "So good you may swaller yer tongue". Now it's hard to imagine having a pasty (or a steak or a burrito) with anything else.

Bless the Michigan Tech students....a credit to their school and our Nation. The originality of their expression of "back home, this time of year", was super. God bless them all the way back home.

By Bill P , Ca. on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 12:29 am:

Please give us an update on Toivo. Did he get to Seattle with that vehicle of his?????? Should we send out a rescue crew to find him?? Please, Charlie, we need status reports.

By Martha K., Pinckney, MI on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 02:03 am:

I especially love the snowshoes. Do they work on sand?

By Cak on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 08:15 am:

I agree with Bill P., we need a status report on Toivo.

By Pikkuleipa on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 08:49 am:

I think that car of Toivo's has alot of sisu in it. I'm a sucker for a good love story, though!

By em,mi on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 11:05 am:

Toivo would have had a new picture posted by now.

By LF, CA on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 12:08 pm:

Hopefully, Toivo's just too busy making his own "snow" angels on a Pacific beach somewhere.
I can't tell, are those antlers or a beer hat (either being appropriate UP wear, I s'pose) on the guy in blue crouched behind the igloo?
Funny thing is, people actually dress like this on the beach in winter here in So. Cal., but without the snowshoes and sleds maybe, when it's a "chilly" and damp 50 deg.
Fun pic!

By Rivera on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 01:02 pm:

Kudos indeed to the "toots" (excuse me, I am partial to Tech) who brought a little bit of the Keweenaw down south with them. Perhaps they have also built a quinzee by now.

By yooper mi. on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 05:29 pm:

really miss you toivo! I miss waking up with you first thing in the morning getting ready for work.

By mark il on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 05:38 pm:

hy charlie was that tiovo on the front page of the wall street news paper?

By Charlie, putting out fires in the Copper Country on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 06:00 pm:

I'll see if we can contact Saint Toivo when he reaches his Aunt Minnie in Fargo. That's where he expected to be by this evening.

I miss him, too, especially on a day like today when we could use a little help getting out the Pasty Cam. Working on it now.

By Tammy, Portland, OR on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 06:03 pm:

I really miss the almost "live" picture from the bridge cam. Is there a possibility of getting someone over there to trouble shoot? Perhaps get the old cam back. The new large picture is beautiful but it isn't the same if it isn't staying current and updating every few minutes.

By John-Canton on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 10:19 pm:

Hope to try the pasty sauce soon. Will have to be very good to replace chow- chow on my pasties though. Cool pic!

By PSmith SC on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 08:21 am:

I have to say that I agree with Tammy regarding the Bridge Cam, beautiful picture but sure miss the timely updates of the old camera.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 09:33 am:

Tammy and PSmith,

I see this morning the bridge cam still has 5:44 last night as the time stamp. Something must not be updating, so we'll check it out today. Thanks for the head's up.
