When most of us fill the bird feeders, we’re not really planning on feeding the chipmunks, but they always seem to find the seed and pack it away. Today, Melanie Hakala Rossi and Donna MacIntosh have teamed up to bring us a look into the world of the chippies here UP North.

Melanie snapped the first three photos, showing their balancing skills when out on a limb. My guess is that chipmunk is looking over the area, trying to spot the best feeder to head over to for lunch. I’m not sure if it’s the same chipmunk, but the one sitting on the little chair eating, was given lunch the easy way, just hop up there and crunch away. That third chipmunk, was doing what they do best…stuffing seeds in their cheeks to take somewhere and store for the winter months. These little critters can clean out a feeder quite quickly doing just that.

The last three shots were taken by Donna. She has numerous feeders for the birds in her backyard and even when she hangs them out of reach of the pole, those crafty little furballs still find a way to climb the pole and get onto the feeders. If you can’t beat ‘em, I guess you have to join ‘em. They have to eat, too. I just wish they didn’t pack away so much of it… makes me wonder if they even know where it is come winter.

Neat pix! Reverse psychology would be to set up feeders exclusively for chipmunks and let the birds take them over.

I know all God's critters have a purpose but I wouldn't give you a dime for all the chipmunks on the North American Continent. I don't even like Alvin, Theodore and Simon.
