Somewhere in Melody Provost Holmes' travels around Dickinson County, she spotted a mother cow taking care of her just born calf and out came her camera. She immediately let me know about her photos of the event and her excitement was contagious. I remembered back to the days that we were farming and how exciting it was when a farm birth was about to take place.

If I'm not mistaken, that's a Hereford cow with her beautiful little black eyed calf out there in the field. I love the stare-down in the first photo. Then the baby forgets about the lady over there with the camera as it begins to look for something to eat. It didn't take long and the calf had found where dinner comes from. In Melody's last photo, Mom begins the job of cleaning up her new arrival.

Isn't nature amazing, that minutes after a calf is born, it is able to stand up, walk and find where to get nourishment?

My only question is WHERE IS THE SNOW? I thought from everything I have seen the cow should be knee deep in snow and the calf completely covered. I guess Dickinson Co. is not a part of the normal UP this winter.

Brings back many wonderful memories! Dad had Hereford cows and Black Angus bulls, that results in the black white face calves. That cross results in faster and heavier gaining rate since the Hereford is a smaller size breed.

Oh, how I love cows ~ they have such a calming effect. We had a Jersey when I was a child....I would stand next to her fenced-in yard and 'talk' with her....she'd quietly 'moo' back to me.;> Ah, memories!!
