Bob Gilreath and his wife, Liz, made a late night visit to the Calumet Waterworks Park to try and capture the Comet PANSTARRS as it made an appearance over the Keweenaw recently. Bob set up his tripod and took a number of long exposure shots, but he said it wasn't until he got back home and zoomed in on the top photo with his computer, that he saw it. If you're having trouble spotting the comet, Bob says to look just down and right of center at what looks to be 3 stars, the top 2 at a 45 degree angle are the middle stars of Andromeda and the 3rd is the comet faint tail up and right. Can you see it now?

The next photo is a shot of the Constellation, Orion the Hunter, which you can see standing out nicely in the night sky there. Bob said that the western shore of the Keweenaw, over Lake Superior, was perfect for comet watching, until the full moon quickly rose in the night sky and washed things out.

It was about that time that Bob and Liz decided to head back home and as they passed by the Calumet Theatre, there was one more photo opportunity that Bob just couldn't pass up. The moon and the Theatre clock both shining in the night sky. Nice way to close out an evening of star gazing here in the Keweenaw.

Maybe this will help:

comet

We got to see it out in the country as well, away from all the city lights. The real one is coming in November from what I hear; supposed to be as bright as the full moon in daylight....
