Assinins

Today's Pasty Cam is a little bit different. We've been looking at history in the Baraga area, with focus last week on Assinins. The top shot above is from Gerald Mathews (compare it to the old photo from last week).Today Edie and I are actually passing that way this afternoon on the first day of a road trip down US-41 that will take us to Florida, in time for the big Pasty Fest at The Villages in Florida on Wednesday.

Check back this afternoon for an "almost live" shot from Assinins, and an update on our trip. We'll be giving progress reports of this journey each morning this week. Have a good one :o)

You guys are so lucky, Charlie! That should be such a fun trip!

Thanks for the cool aerial pictures of the Baraga area. I love that drive around the bay, but have never stopped to see that area, just the snowshoe priest! Will try to do that some day!

Edie & Charlie, have a wonderful time! When you arrive to The Villages and happen to meet up with Don & Sandy Johnson say Hi for me, they are my brother and sister in law. They retired there last year.

Have a wonderful time you two. My husband and I have often
talked about driving US 41 from start to finish. I'll be very
interested in following your account of your trip.

Well, about twenty years ago, when we still lived in Memphis, we tooled up to Nashville, then down to Miami via US 41, Key West, and other areas of Florida on the vacation. A couple months later, we again journeyed up to Nashville, and took 41 up to Copper Harbor, and the end of the line, North end, along with other areas of the U.P. The object was to travel the entire length of US 41 in the same summer. Serendipity! Wonderful idea, great Summer.

Being a Yooper, born and raised in Houghton, I am curious about this Villages Yooper Club. Is it only for Villages Yoopers? I live full time now about 2 miles from the Villages, at Wildwood. Any details?

Hi Richard - Follow the link in my posting above to the Michigan Yooper website for more information.

Sorry we weren't able to post a followup on Sunday. We did shoot a little video around Assinins, and hopefully can get it on by Monday evening. We hit some pretty bad weather on the way down into Wisconsin, so were not able to keep our original schedule. Still on track to reach Florida by Tuesday evening.

US 41 in Tennessee runs through the small community where I grew up, Radnor. So when we'd vacation in Florida, we'd go to the corner and just head south.
