When Brenda Leigh is at her 2nd home near Sault Ste. Marie on the eastern end of the U.P., she's within sight of Lake Superior. Earlier in the week when the winds were blowing and there was a definite chill in the air, she said she just had the urge to go down on the shore and see the waves and when she got there, she was treated to the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. heading upbound in the shipping lanes. With the bare branches in view and the whitecaps on the Big Lake, you can almost feel the wind chill yourself. Thanks for braving the elements to bring us a glimpse of the McCarthy at work, Brenda.

Wanna talk lonely freighter...I had a Christmas dinner while still "asea" aboard the CRISPIN OGLEBAY way back in '57.

Hope everyone has a great winter season as we enter the coldest months of the year.

Cool pics and a nice story, Eddyfitz. I'm glad your still around to talk about it.
Happy 12-1-12, everyone!

Thanks for the beautiful view, Brenda, but as Eddyfitz said, it looks like it could be a very 'lonely' sail, especially at this time of year.

Great pictures. Thanks for braving the cold for us yet again, Brenda!

A lonely sail for the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr.?

Oh maybe not all that lonely, there are currently 17 ships on Lake Superior, including the Alder (USCG) and the Kaye E. Barker at Marquette.

See (click →) the Marine traffic on Lake Superior.

Back in 1958 I had Christmas dinner aboard the Henry R. Platt jr. in Superior, WI. We were in the process of laying her up for the winter. We were in the boilers chipping scale from the fire tubes. Don't think I could even get through that man-hole anymore. :o) If I remember right, I got home the day after Christmas. But, they sure fed us good!
