By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 06:33 am:

Cheryl, May God comfort you and all of the family's of the crew of the "Edmond Fitzgerald". The bell will toll "29" times.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 06:51 am:

A (((((hug)))) to Mikie as well. Cheryl's father was Mikie's Godfather.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 07:45 am:

Cheryl, thinking about you today and sending hugs your way. And I know that Mikie loved your dad too, so thinking about him today as well as all who lost family when the Fitz went down.

Great picture of the freighter, Lee. We captured pictures of that ship entering Duluth harbor this past summer. Quite a site to see.

Loved George's picture, too. I think it was October's picture on the pasty calendar.

Have a great day, everybody!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 07:59 am:

My condolences.
Is the lake quiet today? I see a number of ships on the MarineTraffic website.

Starting with that link that Mary posted on the Cam Notes page, if you click on "Remembrances", and then "Memorials", three memorial services for the Edmund Fitzgerald taking place this weekend are detailed: at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, at the Mariner's Church in Detroit, and at the Mariner's Memorial Lighthouse in River Rouge, MI.

Prayers especially for Cheryl and for Mikie, and their families.

A very sad time on the Lakes. Condolences, Cheryl, and Mikie.

An earthquake hit my area around noon. Centered in eastern KY, but it made the dishes rattle in my kitchen cabinet. 4.3 on the Richter scale. Thought when we left Bakersfield, CA, we left that 'stuff' behind.:< Actually have experienced several since moving here in 1987.

Thinking of you, Cheryl and Mikie and all the others who lost family members that day.

Cheryl--I'm thinking of you especially today. For you, and for the
others who lost family on the Edmund Fitzgerald, November 10th
will never be an ordinary day ever again. Mikie: I had not realized
that Cheryl's father was your godfather. Hugs to both of you.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 04:14 pm:

Shirley, that must have been a big surprise! When Bob & I were dating he had a race car that would shake his mother's dishes out of the cupboards when he started it up clear out in the garage!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 05:36 pm:

LOL! Bet Bob's Mom loved that.;)

By D. A. (Midwested) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 06:45 pm:

I remember that fateful day all too well. The wind
was blowing so hard everyone was walking at a 45
degree angle. I was living above the old bakery
(Crown Bakery I think) on Shelden Ave in Houghton.
We could step out our second floor window onto the
roof of the old Library Bar. The bakery had a huge
chimney at the back of the building. The entire
top of the chimney blew off onto the roof of the
building sending tons of bricks through the
ceiling and onto the floor of the 3rd floor
apartment above mine. The thunder sent my roommate
diving behind the couch. You can still see the
repairs made to the top of the chimney.

My thoughts and prayers go to those that lost so
much more that day.

Remembrance and prayers for all Great Lakes sailors who have lost their lives over the years, I don't know the exact number but it's in the thousands. The Fitzgerald is the most known because of Gordon Lightfoot. The worst loss of life on Lake Superior was the Algoma at Isle Royale, the worst disaster on the Great Lakes was the Eastland in Chicago when if my memory is correct was about 6 or 700 people who lost their lives.

By Diana P. (Diana) on Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 11:19 pm:

Mary, I was referring to the link in the first part of your Cam Notes, third paragraph:

http://www.ssefo.com/crew/index.html (29 men who lost their lives)

From there you can get to the page which shows three of the services scheduled for this weekend.

Mary says: OOPSIE! I forgot that there was a link in my original note, too, Diana. I reposted the wrong link, sorry about that! :-)

By Diana P. (Diana) on Sunday, November 11, 2012 - 10:02 am:

... but thanks for the assist, Mary! Guess I should have called it the "Cam Notes" and not the "Cam Notes page". I know my link looks different than yours, but it takes you to the same place. Think it's a moot point now, anyway. Good thoughts. :-)
