If you haven't already felt the cold of the wintry weather we've been having here in the U.P., maybe today's trio of icy scenes will give you that shivery feeling! Let me set the scene for the first two shots… Picture in your mind, Z-Man lying on the cold icy shoreline, first snapping a close-up of a beautiful icy sculpture. Then he slides himself just a bit closer to the edge, just waiting for the perfect wave to come along and SPLASH!! In case you're wondering, yes, he did get wet! :-> In the third picture we get a somewhat larger perspective of the frigid blue edges of Lake Superior, compliments of Lee Rowe, who looks like she may have stayed a bit dryer by staying on shore!

WOW!

By RD, Iowa on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 06:32 am:

At first I didn't catch the fact that Mr. Z caught the wave smack on the end of his lens (middle photo). Must have been a cold day to instantly crystalize on the glass!

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 06:32 am:

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

By julie b., MI on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 06:38 am:

The photo of the wave looks like a map of the lower 48 {with a little of Canada thrown in!}

Have a blessed day everyone!

By John Van Dyke on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 09:40 am:

What is the story on the little picture? Looks like a kid taking a header into open water.

By Ron, Vancouver WA on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 09:43 am:

More chilling photos from the GREAT UP. Here in the NW its been so warm many of my bulbs are sticking their heads above ground, my nieghbor has a bloom on a rose bush. Still we wish we were back home in the Copper Country.

If y'all like that sort of thing, don't miss Ken Libbrecht's talk on snowflakes tomorrow. He's a physicist at Caltech, and he seems to know as much about snow as any Yooper. It's Michigan Tech Great Events lecture:

Remarkable photos, Z-man!
But, now that I'm completely chilled, will someone please post a picture of a warm, sunny, Big lake? Th-th-th-thanks!

By Liz, Idaho on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 10:37 am:

I picked the 3rd one for wallpaper today. Ever so hard to choose! Thanks, Mr. Z-man!

Sitting here shivvvvering, looking at those 8 pics of crazed people going into the water, now I want to see the pics of them each coming out of the water. Oh my gosh! What prizes did they get this year? Wasn't it bikini's last year?

By Sandy Texas on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 04:48 pm:

WOW...great pics, Z...Mary, I'd like to listen to their comments when they come OUT of the water...NEVER AGAIN, maybe...But when you're that young..."you can take anything"...right??? ~~~smile~~~

By Frank P. Ca. on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 08:17 pm:

With all that bone chilling cold it's time for a good stillwaters pasty with Toivo and Eino's pasty sauce. Excellent pics.

By Deep in Houghton on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 10:50 pm:

Nice to see what it's like back home. I just took a shower outside and wandered over to the tangerine tree and ate a couple of them. Yummy! It's still about 80 here at 5:45 in the afternoon in Honaunau, about 20 miles south of Kona on Hawaii. Sorry about that.
