Wah! -28° below this morning with wind chill (which is actually warmer than yesterday!) Quite the unique shot taken by Bill Haller (or Mrs. Bill) through their window at Bete Grise. The frost on the glass frames the scene just perfectly, giving it a sense of looking into another world. Which, of course, here in the U.P. is what it seems like when you walk out into the sub-zero temperatures we get, along with the blowing and drifting snow. Just beyond that little gazeebo you can see the edge of the channel wall which connects the big Lake to Lac La Belle. To get your bearings, the Mendota Lighthouse is further to the right of this scene.

Lot's of stuff goin' on here in the Keweenaw this weekend, in spite of the cold. The VFW pasty sale in Calumet from 10am-2pm, Big Buck Night tonight in Dollar Bay, and Heikinpäivä happenings in Hancock. All I can say is - - bundle up!

Today's pic is just awesome, its cold here in Afghanistan now, we did get some snow the other day but it melted as fast as if hit the ground, but I really love this pic. Take care everyone and Keep the Faith.

Every day the pictures get better and better. I'm such a winter freak and we get so little around here it makes me crazy. The 8 inches we had last Saturday disappeared by Tuesday. It finally feels like winter now but the ground is bare. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day.

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 08:31 am:

That is a beautiful shot. Just checked out the bridge cam. How long is the blizzard suppose to last? How many inches of snow do you already have? No snow here in Mishawaka its just cold. Have a good day and keep warm everyone.

good morning yoopers, put another log on the fire! stay warm, have a great day!!!

By Brenda Lower MI on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 09:22 am:

Very nice picture this morning...all of the snow we had is pretty much gone, only a light dusting remains. A lot of the rivers are at or near flood stages in some parts of lower michigan with all the thawing and rain the past few days. I am looking forward to visiting the Houghton/Hancock/Copper Harber area in July and leave the hustle and bustle of lower michigan behind. I hope everyone stays warm, and have a great weekend:)

My freezer is not 28 below 0, enjoy the day.

By Dave, Laurium on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 10:05 am:

Well, it's just another balmy day in the Copper Country. The sunscreen and bug spray is flying off the shelves today. Here's a shot of Bete Gris with Mt Houghton in the background on the nice blue sky winter day earlier in the week....

Looks like Jack Frost did some artwork on the top of that window. I remember seeing that at the bottom of our old drafty windows when I was a child and imagined ferns and jungles and animal pictures in them. The adults just saw it as heat loss. LOL

By sur5er, Indiana on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 10:42 am:

Beautiful picture...definately another pic to add to my screen saver.

SGT Nate, Thank you for protecting our freedom.

Hancock was mentioned on the Weather channel this morning. Now I know you guys are getting hammered. Be using the saying, "Made'r Eh?" At least the plow drivers know what there doing up your way. They are clueless down here in Iowa. Have a good one eh.

Have a look at the Granite Island Lighthouse webcams right now. The sun is shining, and there's a weird sea mist on the lake. Granite Island is near Marquette.

To Sara and Rachel who were wondering about double bladed skates. There is an ad for them this morning from a store in Green Bay.

Definition of "blizzard" from the Audubon Society's
"Field Guide to North American Weather" by David M. Ludlum, A.E. Knopf, c1991, pp.143-144: "...winds with speeds of at least 35 miles per hour are accompanied by considerable falling and blowing snow, and temperatures of 20 degrees F or lower...[and] expected to prevail for an extended period of time. 'Severe blizzard' warnings ... expect wind speeds of at least 45 mph along with a great density of falling or blowing snow and temperatures of 10 degrees F or lower." Feel sorry for the college kids racing at Ripley today!!!!

"... -28° below this morning with wind chill..."

Naw, I'm not going to start in on a tirade about how when I was a kid we didn't have this wind chill stuff...but still, this is the yoop! I think this talking about the temperature with the windchill is undignified!! ;) Tell what the real temperature is, and let the weather channel addicts brag about how cold it is "with the wind chill".

By Judy Chesaning MI on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 11:07 pm:

What a wonderful picture! Nice to see a window touched by Jack Frost.
