By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 07:43 am:

Good morning from a humid Mishawaka, IN.

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 08:13 am:

Charlotte, Any rain yet? It piddled here in western IN...Lake Michigan must have pushed away those thunder storms that were predicted.

By Jerry in ILLINOIS on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 08:20 am:

Good morning kids!!! I'm planning on coming to the U.P. the last week of July and would like to do a one day trip out to Isle Royale. Does anyone know if that is doable. I want to make sure I have enough time to see some of the island and not be to crunched for time. Thanks, from a youper wanta be!!

By geoff88, michigan on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:21 am:

ooh this sucks, i miss the keweenaw.... i lived their all my life and was forced to move this summer, i am only 17. I wanna swim in the lake today! (: yes go to isle royale it is a beautiful place to hike.

By lz, mi on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:22 am:

The rain gods in the Lake Michigan area must be wacky this year! My co-workers in Holland are complaining because they have had no rain in sooo long. I live about 30 mi south of Holland. Last night we had two hours of heavy rain. My dirt driveway is mostly now in front of my garage!

By Yooper in Indiana on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:37 am:

sur5er, we had an inch at our place in Bristol (east of Elkhart) last night. We certinally need it and more is forecasted for today. Where are your from originally?

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:38 am:

lz, It's strange being on the shores of Lake Michigan. When the wind is coming out of the north during the spring, fall, and winter, we get dumped on with rain and snow. But in the summer, with the winds out of the south, it will cloud up..we will be promised rain and thunder storms...and all we get are a few splashes of rain. Meanwhile, a few miles south of us, they are getting dumped on by the rain gods. Guess it peters out when it gets to Lake Michigan. Like now...it has been cloudy for two days...just sitting there...and my windmill is barely moving.

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:43 am:

Geoff88, What part of the UP are you from? Sounds like you had to move during your senior year.

Yooper In Indiana, I'm originally from Monroe County Michigan...and anywhere north of the Mighty Mac during the spring and summer :) Where are you originally from?

By geoff88, michigan on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:48 am:

i am from mohawk MI

By geoff88, michigan on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:52 am:

i went to cally high & yes i was on my senior year, i will move back asap though, it has been rough here in provo Utah i do not belong in a place like this. I am a full blood yooper

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:57 am:

Sur5er, yesterday here at my house in Mishawaka we got .4 inches of rain. They are predicting more showers this afternoon. But like yesterday they will be hit and miss. We sure could use more.

By maijaMI on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:10 am:

Hopefully Dennis will do his stuff up here in the north!

It was pristine Keweenaw weather 4th of July week, but now looks like you guys are getting hot and humid too. Not as bad as down here though!

By geoff88, michigan on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:11 am:

you need rain, maybe lightening will start a wild fire. here where i am we havnt got rain in over 7 days and it was not much, every year their is more than 1 wildfire.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:16 am:

I mentioned yesterday that last year we had a day when everyone wrote in and told what they do for a living, etc. If you're interested in checking back like I was, look in the pasty cam archives for July 28, 2004. I was going to print it, but it was 31 pages! Comments went until about 11:00 a.m. the next day, with one coming days after that!

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:17 am:

Geoff88, Hang in there and hopefully you will be home in da UP soon. We moved to Indiana during my daughter's senior year..and talk about culture shock. We Michiganers are a very unique breed. Needless to say, child headed to college in Michigan as soon as she graduated from high school. So I imagine that Michigan Tech is looking really good to you, eh. :)

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:31 am:

Michigan always looks great--rain or snow or sun.

By lz, mi on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:59 am:

Geoff88, I left the UP and had to go to school in Virginia my junior year. While I enjoyed that I returned to the UP with a whole new perspective of my background. Went onto MTU and that is a decision I will never regret. Hard to look on your present situation as positive, but it will be!

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 11:16 am:

Marsha, I just got done reading the 'what's your occupation' posts from July of 04...wow. You really know how to get everyone on the board involved :) So what's your next question? I need a break from cleaning my office today.
Found in Survivor's office: one doggie biscuit..half eaten; one frisbee; a tennis ball; one paperclip chain from one bored child; dust bunnies...ok, so a entire colony of them; an invite to a baby shower (I bet the kid has graduated from college already); keys to a car that we sold in Michigan...which means we relocated junk from my office in Michigan to my office in Indiana.

By Glenn in VA on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 11:33 am:

All

As a Tech grad living in Virginia I'm always interested in UP stories while browsing the web. Here's one that appears on the
CNN pages today (your secret is out of the bag!)

By Trueyoop, Mi. on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 12:46 pm:

sur5er, gee, from all of your post's we thought you were a True Yooper, not a Yooperwanabe. Sorry about that..

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 01:07 pm:

Trueyoop, Why thank you...that most definately is a compliment. I have always referred to it as home because I am up there so often. And hopefully in a few years, we will move up to da UP for good....

By Yooper in Indiana on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 02:22 pm:

sur5er,,, I am from the Laurium/Calumet area and spent all my summers on the nicest shore of the Keweenaw. Left there many years ago, but still young enough to be working, I get back there 5-6 times a year. There use to be a family from Monroe that camped up there every year.

By John P on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 02:25 pm:

Jerry in ILLINOIS--Read something recently obout the nerw Isle Royal Queen IV. She is a faster boat than the old one and makes the trip in 3 hours. Schedule is leave Copper Harbor 8:00 AM, spend four hours at Isle Royal and leave at 3:00 back to Copper Harbor. If four hours is enoughg visiting time you can do it in one day.

By geoff88, michigan on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 03:01 pm:

yes jerry if you you were planning a day trip to Isle Royale your best bet would prolly be the new queen, iv taken the ranger and it takes 6 hours 1 way, my ex step father works on the ranger, so i get good deals, Iv hiked the whole entire island in 1 trip and saw 18 moose, got chased by 1 mother. i plan to travel back to the island also and maybe find a job their as trail crew.

By geoff88, michigan on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 03:03 pm:

good deal john p

By joesyopper on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 03:23 pm:

Jerry: Your only opportunity for a one day trip is the Isle Royal Queen. Go to the Pasty.com home page and click the Isle Royal line. They say your chance of going at this late date are slim and none.

By geoff88, michigan on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 03:43 pm:

ouch!

By tink1903 on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 06:41 pm:

anyone know who phyllis latvala is? if so plaese post. thank you

By Jenny78 on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 08:00 pm:

Yep I know her. Nice, funny lady. Do you know her?

By Beverly, San Jose on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 08:47 pm:

Hi Kevin of Lodi. We are baking here in the San Jose Area. You can almost hear the mountains sizzling and see the heat radiating off them. Perfect conditions for a wild fire. Our mountains are golden as our California moniker states and so very beautiful, but oh so dangerous. That's all we need, adding a smoke factor to our already polluted air. At least you work the night shift so that has got to be cooler. Our natural A/C from the fog rolling in over the mountains from the Pacific is not doing it's job. Take care.

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:40 pm:

Yooper In Indiana, I have camped in the Keweenaw...usually up at the Fort...but not every summer. Would have been something if we would have known each other. Sigh. Do you remember the last name of the family from Monroe...wonder if I know them.
Beverly: are you repeating, repeating yourself? :)

By Beverly, San Jose on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 12:10 am:

sur5er: that's what happens when you have another birthday :)

By Kevin K, Lodi, Ca. on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 03:49 am:

Beverly, San Jose. How are you? The valley is a lush green, what with the irrigation for all of our crops. But up in the foothills where we live, it is also that dry golden color and HOT! Last week a little farther "up the hill" from us there were two fires already this season. We watched, with some nervousness i might add, the water tankers flying back and forth fighting it.
The night shift is a lot cooler, tho still hot in the plant. Well, break is over....Time to get those peaches in the can.

By sur5er on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 06:53 am:

Beverly, Did you have a birthday this week? Happy Birthday :)

By Yooper in Indiana on Friday, July 15, 2005 - 10:44 am:

July is a great month!!!!!
