Good morning :) Great pic Ellen.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 11:01 am:

OK, guys, when I asked for restaurant suggestions a couple years ago, you responded. I now have tostada pizza at Ambassador every month when I come UP! I've tried many of the ideas given to me. About a year ago, when I asked everyone to tell their profession, etc., I got a great response. It was fun to get to know everyone! (I need to go back and find that and print it for reference.)

Now I'd like to know what your screen names mean. Mine is pretty obvious: I live in Genesee (suburb of Flint), and my cottage is in Aura on Lake Superior. So how about it--sur5er, what did you sur5? bethecute1, why? Roudy, are you? It's always funny when someone I assume is a guy, is actually a girl, and vice versa.

By Ms. Katie on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 11:07 am:

Marsha, that sounds like fun. Lets see what results you get. I love finding out about other people and their stories. I'll check back this evening

By Kathy from Ann Arbor/Cheboygan on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 12:16 pm:

Hi
My screen name reflects the town where I have a job (Ann Arbor) and the town where I have a vacation home & where I plan to live after retirement (Cheboygan). My maternal grandfather bought two lots on Lake Huron in 1958 out at Cordwood Shores subdivision; one went to my Mom's side and one went to my aunt's side. As my aunt remarked last weekend, 4 generations have enjoyed the property now.

By mrsrock630 on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 12:40 pm:

My husband is nicknamed 'Rock' by the guys at work so I am mrsrock. The 630 is our anniversary and his birthday.

By sur5er on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 12:41 pm:

Marsha,
I survived being held at gunpoint...and it is the reason I was forced to relocate outside of Michigan. I never give up the hope, that one day, I will be able to return home to Michigan and the UP.

By sur5er on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 12:43 pm:

Mrsrock, Now that is one clever way to insure that your hubby never forgets your anniversary day...get married on his birthday. Now why didn't I think of that? :)

By Cindy--Cent. Heights on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 01:36 pm:

Good Afternoon, Another beautiful day here in Calumet.Just got a phone call from my friend in West Palm Beach Florida telling me I have a round trip ticket to Florida waiting for me!!! Yeepie, guess this hot weather is good for me. Getting me ready for the heat in Florida. I finally get to see the ocean, I'm so excited can't wait. Hope no hurricane hits when I'm there.

By Dave in Kuwait on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 01:38 pm:

Marsha,
I work at the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait. I've been here for two years, and I guess I'll change my screen name when I leave here two years from now.

By danbury on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 02:38 pm:

There's a link to an article about Tahquamenon Falls and some other stuff on the main page that I've got a question about. It mentions oldgrowth forest along the river - is that oner of the few oldgrowth spots in the UP (which as far as I got it by reading this site for quite some time was virtually clear-cut some hundred years ago), or just an assumption by the author?

Since I'm posting, the nick refers to one of the Danburys in the US - first place I think about when wishing I could fly over. And no, it's not CT.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 03:11 pm:

Gorgeous picture. Danbury, I think that forest at Taquamenon is an original, although, a lot of forest was burned a number of years ago.

Name? Well, Yep, Margaret (first name) and Amarillo the old residence. However, no matter where I go, people ask: Where are you from and I say, Wisconsin on Lake Superior and Michigan.

You can leave, but somethings never change like my "unaccent."

By bthecute1, San Jose on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 03:56 pm:

You ask tough personal questions Marsha, but seeing as to us all being friends here, I have no problem in answering. I was criminally violated and held at knife point when I was a young girl. To cope with what happened to me I would clown around and always have a quick funny remark to hide my pain. Sometimes to the point of irritating my mom. When that happened she would say..."There she is again ... being cute". Somehow, the tag stuck. Later in life, my business was robbed and I was held at gunpoint. There was a shot out and the perpetrator was killed.

By downstate don on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 04:38 pm:

Ellen; What a great photograph. It made my day.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

By maijaMI on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 04:54 pm:

you always start interesting stuff, Marsha.

My name's obvious. maija is Finn for Mary, my birth name. I added MI long ago because there is a Maija from Seattle who has checked in here occasionally.

sur5er and Bthecute1: whoa! Congratulations on how you have successfully carried on.

By bj on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 05:06 pm:

Hi Dave - I heard you were coming home for a visit. Hope I get to see you. From one of your Bootjack cousins.

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores, MI on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 06:14 pm:

My name is also very obvious. I live in St. Clair Shores which is a suburb north of Detroit. I like to walk in one of our parks along Lake St. Clair in the mornings, but I as I look out at the lake when I'm walking, I'm always wishing I was looking at Lake Superior.

Hats off to Sur5er and Bthecute1! What happened to you must have made you stronger.

By sur5er on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 06:23 pm:

Maija, Thank you. ;)
Bthecute1: Ah ha...survivor humor. Believe it or not, it is very healing...and I use it in my work with crime victims. Besides, laughter is the best stress reliever. Congrats on surviving. Wow!

By copper country resident on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 06:29 pm:

Sur5er & Bthecute1-Lotta courage you ladies have to get on this website and talk about what happened to you.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 08:53 pm:

Sur5er & Bthecute1, Two couragous ladies.

My name is Charlotte and I live in Mishawaka, IN about 10 miles south of the MI boarder.

One more day and I leave for the UP.

By julie b., MI on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 09:03 pm:

name and the fact that i have lived all over Michigan - Flint, Marquette, Muskegon and Antrim County; maybe one day i can add the CC!

By IndyPrincess on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 09:25 pm:

My name comes from Indy being that I own a '97 and a '90 Polaris Indy Classics...and Princess coming from, well, I don't think of myself old yet to be a squaw. And IndyPrincess sounds better than IndySquaw.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 09:38 pm:

I had my own ideas as to where some of your more unusual screen names came from--all of them wrong! Thanks for sharing with us, girls. I figured it was OK to ask or people wouldn't come up with the names to begin with.

By jackthedrunk on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 11:03 pm:

My name is Jack and I drink too much.

By danbury on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 01:26 am:

Thank you, Margaret - guess if it was indeed burned within living memory, it would look different than old growth.

By Gliderrider on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 02:59 am:

My nickname came from the fact that I used to Hang Glide in the late 70's and early 80's.

By wineaux on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:57 am:
