The Manitou Island Lighthouse is only accessible by boat, and is not open to the public. That didn’t stop Michael Keranen from hopping aboard a seaworthy vessel, along with a few companions and heading out to Manitou to check it out up close anyway. The iron tower these gents are standing in front of was erected in 1861 and along with the one at Whitefish Point, built the same year, are said to be the oldest skeletal towers on the Great Lakes. I like the different perspectives of the two shots by Michael…one up close so you can check out the buildings and tower. Then the other shot showing the several mile stretch of Lake Superior you have to cross to get from the tip of the Keweenaw over to the Island. Looks like the Big Lake was taking a break, with barely a sign of a ripple to be seen!

Whoops... The previous post was actually from Mary Drew, but the technical problems with lines in the Keweenaw today are making life a little harder.

Thanks to the hundreds of Pasty Cam Watchers who have registered since we switched to this method yesterday, made necessary by a spam attack on the discussion board. Sorry for the delayed reply to those few who were having difficulty with the registration process. Email in the Keweenaw is backed up because of the break in communication circuits.

Looks like a wonderful day for a swim. Wish it weren't 1,000 miles away.

Looks Like a fun boat ride out to the lighthouse to me.

I can just imagine myself in the lake - floating on my back, getting out with my skin in goose bumps but feeling so alive!

Beautiful. A new wallpaper again today!

Heard on the news tonight (tv6) that a fiber-optic cable had been cut near the Boston Pond.
I guess it's been repaired.

Greta, I'm with you. On your mark ...one ... two ...two and a third...two and a half...THREE! Aahhhhhhhhhh...does the water feel great or what?
Now how could anyone not look at the second pic and not get homesick?

I take it there is a spiral stairway inside the metal shaft going up to the light? Not much room for anything else except a ladder. Sure would be a wild ride if you tumbled from the top. You'd be a well rounded individual by the bottom!

Description and pictures of the light and stairway at Manitou
