Yesterday was a day of venting on illegal dumping on my property. Today I would like to thank-you all for your support.
Keweenaw will always have a special place in my heart and I can only hope that your leaders read your support and find solutions to illegal dumping.
It’s a shame to see the Scenic Keweenaw having this problem.
Here in Negaunee Township we have one day a month from May through December when we can take our rubbish to garbage trucks waiting at the Township Building. They are selective, so for items such as hazardous waste, auto parts, air conditioners, refrigerators and other large appliances Marquette County has Recycle Centers. This program works! When I take a ride in the woods I don’t see trash just the beauty of the Upper Peninsula.
I know there is a cost for a program like this to the Keweenaw Property Owner, which I would not have a problem with on my property taxes knowing that the Keweenaw through tourism will keep a lot of my Keweenaw friends employed.
I hope someone will take my venting and your support to the next Keweenaw County/Township Meetings and address this problem. Please make the trash piles disappear.
Thanks Pasty.Com for a great web site.
Remember and Pray for the Men and Women in our Armed Forces.
Sincerely, Larry B.

LB, Another avenue in regards to the dumping of appliances and furniture: if area appliance and furniture stores had a policy of taking away the old appliances/furniture when delivering new. This would alleviate the owners of the old appliances/furniture from dumping the items illegally.

Good luck at the next township meeting ;)

Were the towers on Bumbletown Hill somehow associated with the Radar Base? Are they still there? Lived in Allouez as a kid and never did know what those towers were for.

By Dave of Mohawk on Monday, May 30, 2005 - 09:27 pm:

I don't know what all of the towers on Bumbletown Hill are for, but some of them are for the airport; relay towers for radio transmissions to Minneapolis Center. When an airplane on an instrument flight plan [which all commercial flights are]takes off from Houghton Airport they talk to Minneapolis Center.

By knitter on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 - 06:04 am:

The towers were originally constructed by the Canadian government for air traffic control. It was a joint venture of the two governments.
