Yooper, I absolutely love your pictures. They always make me laugh just when I need it the most. Does this mean you are on your way back to the Great UP? Have a great day everyone!!

Rollin...rollin...rollin down da highway! Rollin...rollin..rollin to da UP!

Love the animation Yooper. Thanks for my Monday morning chuckle.

Just when you think the day can't get any better after a terrific Superior sunrise, a returning nesting pair of bald eagles drop down for a shore breakfast, a mere two hundred feet away.

To further welcome spring, the nesting sandhill cranes also just returned today for the new season.

We can't believe that they bears haven't come out yet, with as warm as it's been.

By Keweenaw Spring on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 01:52 pm:

What the heck is going on with the critters today?

Just watched two young deer swim across the Lac La Belle channel from the light house at BG south, just to get to BG north side. The winds blowing so bad, that when they shook off like a dog, the spray went flying.

Stay tuned, we may see some bear yet today, the way things are going ...

By Beverly, San Jose on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 05:25 pm:

I hear so much about the bears in the UP and never hear that they may be dangerous. Have you all domesticated them or what? Are their names "Smokie"?

By Robert, CO on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 06:06 pm:

We had a very U.P.-like day here in Denver yesterday. I thought I'd share a link of some cute snow pictures put up by one of our local TV stations, just in case anybody is missing winter already! Denver Snow

By copper country resident on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 06:16 pm:

Oh, please, not that gas issue again!

By sur5er on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 06:31 pm:

Robert,

Thanks for the pics of the Colorado snow storm. Have to admit that you folks are taking it all in stride. I got a good laugh out of some of the photos. "I-70 closed to Kansas" was a good one...along with "Unassembled snowman for sale". :)

My aunt and uncle lived in Fort Collins, and late one spring they got socked with a blizzard. My poor aunt had to bring the baby calves inside her house, and kept them in her laundry room. Because she was afraid they wouldn't survive the blizzard. So there she was, doing laundry and bottle feeding calves...what a woman, eh.

By sur5er on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 06:46 pm:

Beverly,

True, you don't hear about bear attacks in da UP...but you know da bears are there.

I've always taught my kiddies that the most dangerous bear to come upon, is a cub...because mama bear is never too far away. And if there is something you don't want to do, is get a mama bear angry.

Does anyone remember the year that Houghton had a really bad problem with the bears coming into town? I think it was in the early 90's....but not sure. I was going into Keweenaw to camp, but before crossing the bridge I picked up a newspaper in Houghton and saw the headlines about bears invading town. Decided to hotel it that year. :)

By Mr. Bill on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 07:02 pm:

Beverly, San Jose

Our bears seem to prefer bird feeders, although last forth of July, a pizza off the hood of a car, half way up Mt. Brockway was consumed, with owners safely inside.

I've seem pictures of the last remaining garbage dump in Michigan (Copper Harbor), with cars lined up like attending a drive in movie, watching the bears forage the trash, here on Pasty.

By Fran,Ga on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 07:47 pm:

I have a friend that lives in Houghton off Sharon Ave and they have had a bear coming up on to their porch. Her husband knocks on the bay window and it climbs over the porch rail and goes down the road. They took their bird feeders in.

CC Resident. Maybe I shouldn't do this, but I heard just from my friend in Grand Marais Minn. and gas over there is $2.18 a gal . Geez give us a break.

By copper country resident on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 09:19 pm:

Yea, okay, RCW, I know what you're saying.

By Beverly, San Jose on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 11:02 pm:

I passed a Standard Station wanting 2.97 per gallon today. Won't be long now before we are paying the same price as in Europe.

By Beverly, San Jose on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 11:10 pm:

I think you missed the point, when I referred to the 'bears'....you know the kind that put on their sirens and give you a ticket on the highway... :) :D It's great to hear, Mr. Bill that the 'bears' are for the birds! :)

By Susan, Fl on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 11:34 pm:

Couple of stories to relate ref amazingly docile bears and downright foolish people....this was many years ago in Paradise when there was a dump close in to town and the Coast Guard was still at Whitefish Point. Saw a guardsman dangle a lit cigaret just an inch or two away from an inquisitive standing bear's nose! One slight miscalculation from the man, one swipe from a hurt, ticked off bear, not a good thing! Then there was a young couple with a toddler (maybe 18 months) who put their baby on an adult bear's back to take a picture! At a very young age I was ready to get out and do battle with the "adults"! What were they thinking?! p.s. to Sur5er...there is a music festival coming up on a weekend here toward the end of the month...it's in the Largo city park and the stars there will be Don McLean, Three Dog Night, Lee Greenwood and Survivor! Thought as long as you were in town you might want to stop by for a cuppa tea! :)

By sur5er on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 - 01:57 am:

Beverly,

You are too funny :) Hey now, I was one of the nice Michigan bears...honest. I used to love doing traffic stops, because I got a chance to chit chat with everyone, I stopped...it was like social hour for me.

My training officer got sarcastic with me one day, because I was carrying on a conversation with a motorist that I had stopped. When I got back into the squad car, he asked me, "so I take it you know them."

To which I replied, "Nope...but I do now. And with an attitude like that I am not sharing the recipe she gave me for chicken." :)

By sur5er on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 - 02:15 am:

Susan,

Those are the people that you wonder, 'what part of wild don't you understand?'

We must live in the only national forest that has 'Do Not Feed The Deer' signs plastered up and down the one road that cuts through the back of the dunes. I have seen people get out of their cars, and walk up to the deer and try to hand feed them. Hullo!

Really stupid thing a friend of mine and her husband did with their young son. They were up north, in the woods, and they came across a couple of moose in a clearing. Mind you, it was fall. The phrase 'rutting season' comes to mind...anywho they tell their son to go up to the moose.

So the son is inching closer and closer to the moose and the parents take off in the other direction for the car...thinking this is funny. As the moose turn and start chasing their son back to the car, the parents are inside the car, laughing...thinking these moose chasing their son is funny. Hullo?!

Tee hee about the group Survivor. Wow, if I was part of the band, I could come and have tea with you...with the good china ;) So are you going to the concert...those are some of the best bands of our day, eh.

Beverly, was there a particular part of Europe you had in mind? Because prices differ by more than just some cents, depending where you are ...

By Beverly, San Jose on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 - 03:27 am:

ser5er, with your gift of gab and story telling, I bet those people you pulled over couldn't wait to stop. :)

danbury, ........I remember you stated the price of gas in Germany being about $1.65 more than ours, (or was that $2.65 more) can't quite remember...I'm blond you know!!!!!

Toiveuusinta
ELÄMÄ UUSIKSI

Minun mielestäni elämä kulkee väärään suuntaan.
Ihmisen pitäisi ihan ensiksi kuolla. Kun se asia olisi
poissa päiväjärjestyksestä, pääsisi pariksikymmeneksi
vuodeksi vanhainkotiin. Sieltä ihminen potkittaisiin
pois, kun hän nuortuisi liikaa.

Hän saisi kultakellon eläkelahjaksi ja menisi töihin.
Neljänkymmenen vuoden jälkeen hän olisi kyllin nuori
vetäytymään työelämästä ja aloittamaan opiskelun kunnes
pääsisi koulun penkille. Koulun jälkeen hänestä tulisi
iloinen vesseli, joka viettäisi päivät leikkien ilman huolen
häivääkään.

Sitten tulisi onnellinen vauvaikä, minkä jälkeen ihminen
ryömisi kohtuun ja kelluskelisi autuaasti elämänsä yhdeksän
viimeistä kuukautta. Ihmiselo päättyisi pilkkeeseen jonkun
silmäkulmassa.
