Again we dedicate a beautiful Upper Michigan scene to the memory of friends and loved ones who have gone on, and we invite you to add to this honored list:

Keith "Kedo" Ahonen
Verna Clouthier
Michael James Hamm
Hal Hunter
Marie Louise MacDonald
Donald Pearce
Margaret Pini
Phillip W. Sladek
Martin Sotala
Roger Wolfe

Several of these names bring back some personal memories for me. Louise MacDonald (Poisson) was one of the first residents I came to know when I joined the Still Waters staff in 1993. When we first met, she said something in French, to which I replied: "Je veux un interprčte qui parle anglais" ...much to her delight. (It means, "I want an interpreter who speaks English"). Louise and I became good friends. She passed away this month at the age of 104. Another more recent Still Waters resident, Sharlena Kumbula, also went to her reward last Sunday at 89.

Martin Sotala was a gentleman who spent some time at Still Waters, not as a resident, but as our piano tuner. He was our "sour note" remover. I could always tell Martin had paid a visit whenever I sat down at the keyboard. He died at home on April 18, much too young at age 66.

Tell us about the special friend or relative whose memory you would like to honor.

A special word about Hal Hunter... He was a very special person to me, as is his wife, Frances, and their kids. It was a tragic loss yesterday when he passed away. My prayers, and I'm sure the rest of yours are with the family at this time, and may God bless them at this very rough time, and always.

We rescued Harvey who now mans watch at the home & yard keeping all "chippys" at a distance, but my dear pals of 9 years are still a part of my heart. They are together as they liked in a single urn on the mantle, warmed by the fire as always.

I would like to add 14 year old Nick Gaucher who lost his three year battle with osteosarcoma this month. He was the son of my friend and fellow firefighter Paul. By Helen in Hubbell on Saturday, April 30, 2005 - 07:11 pm:

..Virgina Radeka......left Hubbell yesterday. She was a really great lady who I enjoyed taking care of for awhile. She has an awesome family that will miss her allot. If you ever had the privilage of going into her house you would be in awe at all her families pictures....then out back of the kitchen you would find, drawings and papers, that all her grandchildren have done since they were very young taped all over the walls.Virgina's husband died when he was young and left her with small children to care for. She did an amazing job.....her children are kind wonderful hard working people, just like their mama. Virgina's Children and grandchildren were her pride and joy, not to mention the sparkle in her eyes.

To know Virgina was to love her.

My heart and prayers are with each of you family members ......xoxoxoxo Helen

By L. Hart, Santa Catalina Island, CA on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 01:31 am:

I am very sad to see Verna Clouthier's name on this list. I have many happy memories of being the recipient of warm hospitality in her home in Lake Linden, and also post-sauna goodies and laughs in their cabin across the street from Gitche Gumee camp in Eagle River many years ago. I send my love and sympathy to all the family, dear friends of mine from my youth. I had hoped to visit Verna on my trip North this coming July; I will sorely miss having that visit.

By Beverly, San Jose on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 04:33 am:

What a beautiful picture chosen for today. Who is the photographer?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 06:53 am:

Beverly,

Each "Big Picture" has a mouseover which usually shows the photographer's name. Today's photo was taken by Joyce Tormala.

When the Pasty Cam started over 7 years ago, virtually all of the daily pictures were taken by Jonathan Hopper, my son, who had just discovered digital photography. Then I tried my hand, occassionally adding a shot or two, and Daryl Laitila joined our full time staff, providing even more local scenes. As the site began to gain a regular following of folks desiring a daily reminder of the U.P., others joined in with their handiwork: Dan Urbanski, Steve Brimm, Charlie Eshbach, Joe Kirkish to name a few. Then we started seeing more beautiful daily pictures from a second wave of talent, like Rick Anderson, Don de Yampert, Z-Man, Peg Riemer, Jon Jacobson and others. Finally, when we added the Guest Gallery in 2003, a virtually army of photographers was added - now approaching 300 in number, with over 20,000 photos uploaded. I spent some time last night browsing through the albums and slideshows... What a treasury of virtual tours of the U.P.! Joyce Tormala is among that crop of artist individuals who share the beauty with us.

Each month when we have our final-day memorial, I think of Dan Urbanski, whose passing last summer was a profound loss to the Pasty Central family. It is encouraging every month to welcome so many new faces who are becoming a part of this daily journey.

Dan Urbanski

In memory of Tayen Elizabeth Angel Gauthier, a sweet little baby who never got the chance to experience life. She is safe in the arms of Jesus.

By Beverly, San Jose on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 09:15 pm:

Thank you Charlie. I guess I did not see Joyce's name below the picture. Joyce, this picture is incredible. Thank you for letting us all enjoy your talent in photography and being in the right place at the right time. The colors are gorgeous with the setting sun's reflection on the water and framed by the branches of nature.
