Rick Anderson, has taken to the air for us Pasty Cam viewers more than a few times with his Skypixs Aerial Photos. This flight is over a part of Iron Mountain that I'm not real familiar with, since I normally bypass downtown traffic with a country road route that takes you around the town. So, with that said, my first thought on the name of the pictured lake, was Lake Antoine, but realizing that body of water is much larger than the one in the photo brought me to the conclusion that I was mistaken. I admit to being stumped, so feel free to name the lake and a few landmarks while you're at it too! No matter what you call this watering hole, it must be great to have it right there in town to enjoy, like a big pond on the farm. All that needs doing is to stock it with some fish and it'll be complete!

This lake looks just big enough for "Big John" of Iron Mountain fame,to take a dip. Also, had the best omelette we ever had in Iron Mountain. I cant remember name of the restaurant, but it was in a little house on a corner.

Try: the pit.... an old mining pit.

By Tami, WI on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 08:51 am:

Looks like Crystal Lake! Enjoy or great weather. Lived ont he west side of town for 20 years!

By Mary Jane AZ on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 08:58 am:

This does not look like the "pit" to me as there should be two bodies of water with Stephenson Avenue (US 2), running between them. I've been away from Iron Mountain for 47 years~would like to know where this photo was taken.

Has anyone or does anyone know of anyone that has gone seaching for the Wall of Silver?

By jh mi thumb on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 10:19 am:

Could it be a picture of a a pond on Crystal Lake Blvd? I looked on Google Maps and it looks similar.

By Steve in Iowa on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 10:36 am:

I agree with Tami,WI. This is Crystal Lake viewed from the east side. The little lake to the right of it is Mud Lake. The Hospital should be just out of frame to the left.

By jh mi thumb on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 10:59 am:

Sorry, the map I looked at just listed it as a pond. I thought that it looked kind of big for a pond. But it listed the street as Crystal Lake Blvd. I should have guessed the name would be Crystal Lake.

OK, what's the dif in a lake and a pond?

By allouezandre@phxaz on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 11:46 am:

If you are in Iron Mountain at lunchtime, try Bimbo's for their porkette sandwich. The Best.

By Cori, U.P. on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 11:58 am:

The big lake is definitely Crystal Lake, and the smaller lake is Mud Lake. The community center is the large building on the right end of Crystal Lake, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church is on the bottom of the lake towards the left. I'm pretty sure that the reddish tall building in the middle of the photo and slightly to the right is the Dickinson County Courthouse. The long building on the left side of the photo is the Midtown Mall. Great photo of my hometown!

is us2 in this phot?
I've been through iron Mountain many times, but can't get any bearings from the photo

By ra on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 12:36 pm:

Q.OK, what's the dif in a lake and a pond?
A. Ships go on lakes, boats go on ponds.

By ert, GA on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 12:41 pm:

Good answer, ra!

This is a discussion that I like to start. Also what's the dif in a river and a creek? I've seen creeks that looked like rivers and vice versa.

By h.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 12:53 pm:

what is the population in Iron Mountain?

By vaalea on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 01:08 pm:

when you go up without a paddle it's a creek, and down it's a river

By gw-houghton on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 01:44 pm:

H.M.- population of Iron Mountain is 8154 according to MDOT Highway Map.

By jh mi thumb on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 02:44 pm:

OK. The dictionary says; A pond is a body of water smaller than a lake, often artificially formed.

So who decides how big or small a lake is?

It says a creek is a small stream, somewhat larger than a brook. Another dictionary says a creek is a natural stream of water smaller than a river (and often a tributary of a river)

And our rivers here is Michigan are smaller than the creeks in Alabama. But then we do have much bigger lakes.

As a former West sider, I would say you are looking at Crystal Lake from the North East looking South West. The Community Center is at the right end of the lake. Above it is the West side ball park. The tennis courts are at the left end of the lake. At the top of the lake, we used to refer to it as "Devils Hill", or "Motorcycle Hill." There was a tree swing there that gave you a pretty good view of Crystal Lake also. Now it is a sub-division and medical park. Mud Lake is just out of the picture to the right. Thanks for the picture, it brings back a lot of good memories with friends.

By CrystalLakeKid on Friday, April 22, 2005 - 04:32 pm:

The Crystal and Mud Lake responders are correct! I have lived near the old Devil's slide area for 14 years. That "swing" was probably in my backyard. And the hospital is no longer on Woodward Ave., but larger and re-located to US 2, east of downtown.
