Thanks to the unseasonable temperatures, sunshine and even the rain we've been having, the snow has been melting at a rapid pace. It's definitely not the prettiest time of the year here in the U.P., with the snow taking on a dingy appearance. But if you look past the sand covered snow, like Jamie Harter did in these two shots, you'll find the beauty is still there just waiting for you to discover! Peering through the arch in the top picture you can just see what looks like a chunk of ice floating way out in Lake Superior. In the second shot, the bergs of ice are breaking away from the shoreline, bit by bit, reminding us that summer is on its way.

You forgot the $110/hr plane rental for those of us who cannot afford our own....but it's still worth it!

Thanks for the comments on the pictures! These were just taken last Sunday and now most of what I took is gone already from the weather! The second picture is looking towards McLain's State Park!

At first I thought the first picture was arch rock on Mackinac Is. taken by Edie or Charlie.

Great pictures.

The only thing missing in the top picture is a freighter!

By Mary, CA on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 10:31 am:

Jamie, we have a camp on Lake Shore drive near the old Rendevues (sp) right about where you may have taken your picture. I live in California and miss being down on the beach looking out at the lake. When I was little I thought it was like the ocean. When I came to California and finally saw the ocean I was right. Lake Superior is more beautiful though.

How much snow is still lying in the woods in
Keweenaw? Say around Phoenix-Cliff Mine area.
Anybody here know that?

By Sarah, Central WI on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 10:32 am:

Awesome pictures! Have a wonderful weekend!

Mary, CA We are just down from the Rendezvous going towards McLains St Park up on the Bluff where there is the string up houses/camps. Its a great place!

By John in Ahmeek on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 11:07 am:

Herb_Wis, I live in Ahmeek, looking out towards the bluff and Bumbletown there's patches of snow, guessing maybe around a foot deep, if not less, with just as many patches of bare ground showing.

Yesterday it was in the low 50's, & cloudy with a dank breeze. Because the previous day it was 76, this was described as "cold". Kinda confirms us trolls are wusses...at least some of us.

By Barb, Nevada on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 12:29 pm:

AWSOME picture, Jamie!! A grand way to start my day. I will think of that when the 6th graders are trying to drive me up the wall this afternoon!

John in Ahmeek:

Thanks for the info. Sounds like there would be
some snow in the woods then and perhaps a little
bit early for a good adventure in your neck of the
woods (The Cliff).

Here the snow is gone, except the piles, but there
is still ice in the swamps and the road is soft as the
frost has not totally gone out.

"Wall of Silver" hunters have already been visiting the Cliff on snowshoes, for some weeks now. You may need reserved parking soon ...

By M.B., IL-WI-MI on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 02:21 pm:

Rock Nut - I just started snowshoeing these past 2 seasons, but in jeans and a snowmobile jacket. I find that my jeans get wet fast and I have to turn back sooner than I would like. (O.K. I inherited the snowshoes and wanted to try it out before I invested $$$ into it. Needless to say, I like it.)

1. Where can I buy lightweight pants to go over my jeans to keep them dry?
2. Would you recommend the sticks for balance?
3. Where is the "Wall of Silver" in the Cliffs?
4. Do you know of any groups that go out snowshoeing for beginners to show them new areas?

I have been snowshoeing on deer tracks in Eagle Harbor - I figure the deer must know if it is safe to walk on it or not. My first time out, I went snowshoeing down some roads that were buried by snow.

Thanks, in advance, for your insights and help!

Kevät on jo pitkällä myös minun puutarhassani.. .

By FRNash, PHX, AZ on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 03:59 pm:

jAPEi:
You can avoid the URL problem in the above if you enter the link like this, for example:
\newurl{http://www.astrosurf.com/borealis/seb/new/Greytus%20(ombre%20et%20lumi%E8re).jpg, Greytus}
The result will appear thus:
Greytus
Then a click on the (much smaller) underlined link will go to that URL.

Regarding outdoor clothing: Contact any of the outdoor sports stores on line or in person.
Wind pants over moisture wicking layers is what you need. Cotton (jeans) and sweat may equal hypo- thermia.
Discuss and snoop about layering systems. The new fabrics are much more comfortable and add better movement on the shoes. That goes for socks too.
Hope this gets you on a good start to a new life time sport.

Good Afternoon: Beautiful Pics. Lake looks awsome.
70 here in Missouri, nice sunny day, birds are singing, the tree are getting their leaves, and the flowers are starting to bloom.
Miss the wildflowers and such in the U.P. but don't miss the cold and snow.

It's about 85 here in Tucson today. Summer will be a sauna.... I'm going to keep those pic's for screensavers when July arrives in the desert.

By Ger from California on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 08:47 pm:

I so love the pictures of "home"...It will always be home to me and so many others who grew up in "da" U.P. All my family is there and I miss them very much and I also, miss seeing Mr. Basano at Copper World. His father and my father-in-law were rock hound buddies and what conversations those two would have regarding their latest "finds." Wonderful pictures! keep it up

What?

Did they discover that whole Cliff is a solid "wall of
silver" or something?

We were just going to climb and locate Albion
Rock above North American Gap. But there's not
enough time anyway plus the lingering snow, so
we may go to the Marble Quarry instead....

By Darlene - Royal Oak, MI on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 08:28 pm:

The pictures are beautiful - we can't wait to come up this summer

By M.B., IL-WI-MI on Sunday, April 10, 2005 - 02:49 pm:

Liz - Thanks for your insights! :-)

Herb_Wis - Marble Quarry? North American Gap? Wall of Silver? Where are these places? I have been offroading in the Cliffs and also hiking in Phoenix. But, I never heard of these places....Thanks! :-)
