One rainy day last week, Rob Wetton was in downtown Houghton for coffee and spotted this tug and barge in the distance, so he made a trip back around through town to snap a couple pictures. Rob said he has no idea what tug or what barge they might be, nor does he know what they were doing in the area, but what caught his attention was that the barge was much bigger than what he's seen come through the canal before.

So, I'm turning this over to you Pasty Cam watchers out there, to see if anyone can clue us in as to names for the vessels and what they were doing, sailing the Portage that day. Thanks in advance!

Whether it's rainy or sunny days, the freighters/ship pictures are always great to see!

Nice pictures, Rob Wetton. I can't tell you the name of the tug or the barge, but I did get to watch them live on MTU's Fund Cam, going through the open bridge, as I just happened to see the bridge open. That was interesting. And, I sent the link of the cam to my oldest son, my Tech alum, who got to see them go under the bridge, as well. :-)

The barge appears to be 'hauling' a crane, maybe for dredging? To me, anything that 'sails' on the Lakes is interesting to watch/see!

Neat pics, Rob. Thanks!

I believe that they may be tied up at the Lilly pond. They were
earlier this summer. I saw them heading the other way in early July
but I have no idea where they were headed. It looks like their back
again. There was quite a bit of rock on shore at the Lilly pond but
its been a few months since I was up there.

I do not see any information on the BOATNERD site for the month of September regarding the tug-barge combo.

Today's day in history is linked to yesterday presentation.

Awesome pictures!!

We saw this combination off Eagle River headed north last Sunday. It had several piles of dirt and rock on board, along with the same excavator. It looked more like fill that dredging spoils.
