What a busy time of year here in the Copper Country! There are more scheduled events than one could possibly attend, with today's pictures illustrating the contrast. The Eagle River Bridge Festival - coming this Friday (8/12) at 6pm - celebrates the history of the lower span here in the village, while helping to raise funds to maintain it. Mary Long dug the bridge picture out of her Shoebox, just a short walk from where I type these words. It no longer carries cars, but connects foot traffic from West to East Main, the street where the Pasty Cam has lived for the past 14 years.

I took the second photo last night at Fort Wilkins, during the antique fashion show, which came at the end of busy day including the Copperman Triathlon. By the way, that's Edie in the bonnet on the left (my better half), playing a role from the early 1800's... kind of a "Jane Austin" outfit. Next weekend the Fort hosts the Battery D Civil War Encampment, continuing the flow of time travelers through Copper Harbor.

August especially is a wonderful time to be in this part of the U.P., as the weather is ideal and the bugs relatively few. See more news about things to do in the Keweenaw at the KCVB website, Fort Wilkins event schedule, and the Pasty.com Public Calendar.

I have a copy of an old photo of this bridge with a sign that states that driving faster than a walking speed will result in a $10 fine.
