The Finnish brass band, Ameriikan Poijat (Boys of America), is in the Copper Country for the Pine Mountain Music Festival/ROCKLAND Finnish American opera. They will be performing at the Hanka Homestead in Askel, on Saturday, July 16th, at 2:00 p.m., featuring polkas, jenkkas, waltzes, tangos, and other pieces. The concert is a fund raising benefit for the Homestead. A free will offering will be taken.

Ameriikan Poijat was founded in 1990 and is made up of Midwest musicians, many of Finnish descent. They have performed all over the United States and also in Canada and Finland. The group's leader is Paul Niemisto, a native of Pelkie. For more information on the band: Ameriikan Poijat.

This looks to be an afternoon of lively music, so head out to Askel this Saturday, for some foot-stomping fun. Special thanks to Donna MacIntosh, for providing us with the photos of the Hanka Homestead.

Wish I would never have stopped playing my trombone after high school. I've been asked many times to be in our community band out here, but I seriously can barely get a note out of it anymore. And some people say I have a lot of hot air, lol!!

What a great pic of the band! And sounds like big fun out at the Hanka Homestead...that is one cool area to check out!

Mary - I'm bummed, I tried clicking on the link for Ameriikan Poijat
and received the message that the page no longer exists.

Hi everyone-

Long time reader, first time poster. Still
learning the ins and outs of pastycam!

I moved up here a little under a year ago, and am
definitely enjoying my first summer in the
Keweenaw! I was curious if anyone knows, or could
point me in the direction of someone who'd know,
if this Saturday there is any type of memorial
occurring to mark the 45th anniversary of Ruth Ann
Miller's death in that horrible accident at
Tamarack #4? Drop me a note with any info you
might have.

Given her passing happened long before my arrival
on earth, but I come from the 'little Jessica
falling down the well" generation and recall all
the hurried lessons about well/mine/cistern/etc
safety as a child. Learning Ruth Ann's story has
not only hit home, but fascinated me as a Tech
student as well. The bits and pieces I glean about
her accident are turning the gears in my head
that'll hopefully someday turn into a research
project.

I had a reading of "Sad News From Central Mine"
dedicated to Ruth Ann done on WMTU last weekend. I
hope somewhere she heard it...

Thank you!
