No, it's not the end of the month and no, we didn't "spring ahead" days instead of just an hour over the weekend here at Pasty Central. It's still the middle of March, but when Sharon Smith sent this sunset view with a sun pillar shooting up to the sky, I knew it was one that had to be shared right away. She said it was the first good sunset of 2011 and that she hadn't spotted a sun pillar in quite some time. Sharon also mentioned that people might be tired of seeing her "View From the Field", but when the view looks like this, I don't think you could ever tire of it. Thanks for sharing the beauty with us, Sharon!

I never tire of the "View", Sharon. I read the journal and check out the webcam daily. It is my daily dose of the Harbor!

By Wes Scott (Travelnorth) on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 12:29 pm:

Yes I enjoy the webcam of the harbor and the photos as well. It's a wonderful part of the U.P.

Thanks to everyone. I never get tired of my view, either. I had to untangle the camera strap and go rushing out onto the deck (it was cold!!) to get that one, but it certainly was worth it.

Uncle Chuck, the Girdle of Venus is a phenomenon that you can see, when the sky is clear and you have an unobstructed horizon, just before sunrise, when it shows in the west, or just after sunset, when it shows in the east. At those times, you will see a blue-gray band on the horizon, which is the shadow of the earth reflected in the sky. Right above that blue band there will be a pink band, and that is the Girdle of Venus. It's pink because the sun is shining through a very thick layer of atmosphere, which scatters all but the red light, and since the sky is light, it is diluted to pink or mauve.

It is a very pretty sight in the early morning when I open one eye and look down the harbor. Sometimes, when the wind is calm, I can see it reflected in the water. I hope I can get my body used to daylight savings time so that I will wake up, at least briefly, around that time.

It's just as pretty in the evening, if your eastern horizon is unobstructed, and once or twice I've watched the full moon rising through it.

It's sights like those that keep me staring up at the sky...or like Jupiter and Mercury last evening.

Sharon, Count me as another one who checks out your site daily. I have to make sure Buster is OK and eating!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 03:32 pm:

I too, follow your daily jounal, Sharon, and saw this pillar shot the day you posted it. I've been following you daily for years, through your illnesses, relocations, pet updates, and local weather reports. Your View From the Field is the opening to my day every day. Thanks and keep up the good work. "Meow" to Buster & Jasmine.

It's not a good day until I check on you Sharon. I admire your stamina and your love of the UP. Thank you for your daily journal. Hope you and Buster are okay.

Hi
It must be wonderful to wake up to a view like that. I at least see some grass & trees at the house I rent, but no water & no clear (ie, not light-polluted) sky.

My body got used to having daylight when the alarm went off; it did not like going back to pre-dawn darkness. Yrrch.
