Brita Haapala's hubby and kids have been ice fishing together for years, but just recently, she decided to brave the elements and join them. With fishing gear, ice skates and camera in tow, they headed to Copper Harbor for the day. When they arrived, Brita noticed the two gentlemen in the first shot, pulling a sled with all their fishing gear packed in. They seem to be checking the ice for that perfect spot to set up and snag some fish out of those icy waters... Brita called it a "Yooper Moment." Her family quickly set up their tent and arranged the fishing gear to try their luck in the Harbor, too. But, like typical kids not being able to sit still for any length of time, they were soon strapping on their skates and taking advantage of the windy day pushing them along the ice, then struggling against it to make their way back once again. Looks like a fun day, despite the wind and cold.

Good old fashion family fun! Doesn't look like any grumpy old men or polka music playing there.

There might be some grumpy old men if the fish aren't biting!! J

These are nice pictures of a family having a nice day together. I Went ice fishing only once here on Lake Erie with my son and got out there in his '78 Maveric. We were out so far we couldnt see the houses on the Monroe shoreline..There were at least 100 cars, vans, small Winnebagos etc all having a good time. For the 100 perch we caught I didnt feel it was worth the risk being out there on 2' of ice. As a youngster our mom would not let walk out with our uncles onto Lake Superior to fish.

Thank you for these great shots and for the memories! We used to take brooms out with us as kids to sweep off a good skating spot - just a little bumpy.

Did they catch anything besides the wind and a chill? :) Great photos, thanks!
