There weren't many folks in the general public with color cameras before World War II (or many years after, for that matter). But I found the gem above in Brian Rendel's album in the Guest Gallery, dating back to 1939, where Brian uploaded scans of Bert DeVriendt's wonderful color photos during those pre- and post-war years. This one at Lac La Belle was taken right around the corner from the beach at Bete Grise, where Bert would snap another photo a couple of years latter:

Today's shot off the dock could well have been taken on the second weekend of September in '39, judging by the subtle start of the color change on the hill across the lake. The month ahead is one of my favorite times of the year here in the U.P., because we are about to see the annual transformation from green to red and yellow and every variation in between. Stay tuned for a daily glimpse of this metamorphosis on the Pasty Cam as it happens.

Have a good week :o)

What a neat little boat that is! Color photos from that era sure are rare especially in "out of the way" places like Lac La Belle!

Is that THE BOHEMIA or the MONTREAL?
