Two very different boats in today's photo from Steve Kyllonen. One is of course a freighter, busily hauling it's load across Lake Superior, while the other one is a fishing boat named Spirit. I bet you could tell it was a fishing boat the minute you looked at the photo though, with all those seagulls hovering over it. I don't know how they do it, but those birds seem to appear out of nowhere when you catch a fish, so I bet they think they've died and gone to heaven following a fishing boat like this. Boating season - for most of us - is over, and it's a good thing, because sailing the Big Lake this time of year requires experience like that of the Captains of these two vessels. Those gales of November can kick up the waves without much warning and you don't want to be out there when that happens.

I could have sworn I've seen this picture before. But I don't know where. Nice picture anyway.

The oceans of Michigan, both beautiful and deadly.

We have seen the picture of the Spirit before. One on it's way out with no fish and no seagulls and one on it's way in with fish and seagulls. I remember it. Debs...how is that beautiful new granddaughter? Let the spoiling begin!

The Gales of November..There will be many activities this Monday Nov 10 commemerating the sinking of the freighter SS EDMUND FITZGERALD. I will be at those being held in River Rouge, Mich, where she was built and launched in 1958..Yes 50 years ago a young Eddie was aboard the FITZ for its maiden season..Ohh where does the time go?? I have written my recollections of that season at..

Eddyfitz...I am a very captive audience of your writings of your shipping days! Especially of the Edmund Fitzgerald! I can only imagine how it must have been in those glory days of yours! Thankyou for the one on one history lessons in your link you provided! *Janie

In reguards to seagulls tagging along fishing boats....I am amazed how gulls are out in the Bering Sea tagging along with the fishermen on the t.v. show Deadliest Catch! They must be really hungary to be out there in the ruffness of that area!

Eddyfitz...I wondered why your nickname was Eddyfitz, but now I understand. What a great experience you had on the Edmund Fitzgerald's maiden voyage. Thank you for sharing your treasure with us.

It's been 33 years today since the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and yet we all remember this day because it has touched us in someway. http://www.ssefo.com/

I figured eddyfitz got his name from the fitzgerald..I remember seeing something on that before. Very greatful that you are here with us today eddy and not one who went down on the ship.

God bless them all and may they rest in peace.
