Paul Roberts happened to notice that the Gipp Memorial in Laurium was dedicated on this day in 1935. He sent along some current photos to include with today's Shoebox Memory, a subject we've explored before on these pages, but which we re-visit for a Pasty Cameo.

I've never made the connection between the memorial and the movie, timewise. Notice that it was only five years after receiving the Laurium honor, that Gipp was portrayed by Ronald Reagan in the movie with that famous line "Win one for the Gipper". You may recall that's what Mr. Reagan said to George Bush (senior) when he picked him for his running mate in 1980. On those bricks in front of the memorial, you'll find Ronald Reagan among the donors who helped update the memorial in the 1990's. Regis Philbin's name also happens to be on the list.

I notice on the 2008 edition hanging above my desk, the August photo-of-the-month is that awesome cloud front spotted up at Great Sand Bay by the same photographer who provided today's pictures, Paul Roberts. Just wanted to say Hello to all from a Past student in the youth program of Keweenaw Academy. Just found out that the academy closed in 2004, sorry to say. So just saying thank you to all I did'nt say it to when I left. Champion Hall Hurahhhhhhh!!!!

In addition to the other local Gipp-related honors, the CLK schools still give out the
"George Gipp All-American Trophy" to their top male and female athletes each year.

Also, for those interested in local railroad history, the Quincy Mine will be hosting a tour of parts of the old Quincy & Torch Lake Railroad on Saturday, August 9.

Nice photo and always interesting trivia!Also- I forwarded the note from Mr.Russell to several former Keweenaw Academy staff . I heard from one so far who remembers Mr. Russell and thinks it was a pretty cool message!

My Dad walked over there when he was visiting me to check it out. I never stop but I should on my next walk.

THE GEORGE GIPP ALL-AMERICAN TROPHY
"Awarded annually to the graduating senior of Calumet High School to encourage a high standard of excellence in scholarship, athletics and sportsmanship"

My father, Elwood Lohela, (CHS) was the first George Gipp All-American Trophy winner in 1934. His younger brother, my uncle, Arvo Lohela (CHS) was the fourth winner (1937) of the award. Their names are inscribed on the plaque in the park.

Elwood's grandchildren have all seen the park and plaque where their grandfather's name is inscribed. They have learned through their parents of Elwood's love for the Copper Country and his Finnish heritage. Elwood unfortunately never saw his grandchildren (5). He passed away at age 51 in 1968.

Thank you to those who keep the park looking so nice. It is a place we visit whenever we make it back to the area and the "camp" on Portage Lake.
