Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 12:34 am:

Even though Spring is supposed to arrive tomorrow, we here in the northernmost parts of the U.P. are still feeling the chill of winter. It's been more on the sunny side, but there's still been wind, which of course brings the temperatures down. Today's top picture from William Pekuri, is representative of what the landscape is still looking like, not a speck of green in sight yet. Unlike William's second photo, which first appeared on the Pasty Cam back on November 5, 2007. Same oak tree, same view, different season. In case you're wondering, this is somewhere within McLain State Park.

P.S. It's someone's birthday here on this side of your computer screen, and while I'm not naming names, his initials are Charlie Hopper… (whoops! :->). I'll be the first to wish him a Happy Birthday!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 12:37 am:

Thanks, Mary. That was really subtle.

By Anita Marsy-Bosley (Anitamb) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 07:25 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie! Todays picture is beautiful and it just so happens I was snowshoeing at McLain's last Sunday morning and rested in one of those chairs looking at Lake Superior.....wishing I had brought a thermos of coffee! I can verify it is every bit as beautiful as it appears in this picture.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 07:51 am:

Thanks, Mary. That was really subtle.

Yea, about as subtle as a sledgehammer!!!!

Happy Birthday Charlie!! Thank you for all you do with PastyCentral each and everyday. Also thank you for the pasties last week. The Dr. and I quite enjoyed our little treat from da U.P.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 08:00 am:

You could definitely tell from both pictures that it was McLain Park. Very nice! Thank you!

Happy birthday, Charlie!!!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 08:01 am:

Clever, John, especially since his last name is "Hopper"!!! LOL

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 08:03 am:

Happy B-Day Charlie! Are you getting any fan mail from AARP yet?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 08:38 am:

I like the pictures. McClain is a beautiful place! Thank you, William and Mary for today's pictures. Mary, I agree--I wish the signs of Spring would be a little bit less subtle really soon! :-)

Happy Birthday, Charlie! (Alex, according to today's slide show, it looks like Charlie's 50th birthday was in 2002, so I bet he has been receiving AARP fan mail for a few years, already.)

I hope everyone has a Hoppity, Happy Easter, and that the Easter bunny is good to you! It's almost scary with Easter so early this year.

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 08:52 am:

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 09:01 am:

You hear about the Ether Bunny who couldn't take chloroform?

By Scott D. (Pooch) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 09:02 am:

Happy birthday Charlie.

Yes both pictures are in the campground at McLains, right at the point where the road had to be diverted inland due to erosion caused by lake. It used to be years ago there were campsites on the lake side of the road but not anymore.

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 09:22 am:

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 09:56 am:

Happy Birthday Charlie! McLain is great any time of year, I also was there snow sheoing not too long ago and was pulling Taylor on the sled. Bad plan found myself laying in the snow under some trees for a while until I could breath again, he is too heavy for that anymore.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 10:22 am:

By Tim Holland (Tholland) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 06:41 pm:

Has anyone tried to log onto Copperharbor.org in the past two days? It hasn't opened for me. Just hoping they didn't shut down the web site.

Mary says: After reading your post, Tim, I gave Copperharbor.org a try (at 7:00 p.m.) and it went to the webpage immediately. It's got a new format too, so that was a surprise. Give it a try again, maybe it was just not available while they were updating it.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 06:48 pm:

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 08:53 pm:

Hey Charlie, live it U.P. happy b-day!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 10:04 pm:

That's interesting, Tim and Mary. I just tried to load Copperharbor.org, and it immediately went to a "This page cannot be found" page, but not one telling me that it should be there, rather to one with different Copper Harbor or other Copper references, like it totally does not exist any longer. Clearly, our Charter cannot find its DNS entry, at best. I am wondering if they just forgot to renew their domain name, or something like that?

By Diana P. (Diana) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 10:49 pm:

Hope you enjoyed your special day, and had a wonderful birthday today, Charlie! :)

By Stewart Keskitalo (Skeskitalo) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 11:10 pm:

Happy Birthday Charlie! Thanks for keeping all the Yoopers who have flown the coop in touch with their home. Without this site it would be next to impossible. I continually introduce people to the Copper Country by way of Pasty.com. It is the best way to show the area and what it has to offer for tourists. The history of the Copper Country is so rich that it is important to save and preserve and show.
Thanks Charlie!

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 11:51 pm:

The domain "www.copperharbor.org" is invalid

This is the page that comes up when you click on the link from the home page? Maybe they are still updating the page.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, March 20, 2008 - 07:41 am:

As far as we know, by Thursday morning the real pages of copperharbor.org are visible again. Please report any observations of glitches to support@pasty.net

By Jeffrey P. Carlson (Dlineman) on Thursday, March 20, 2008 - 01:31 pm:

While at Suomi they gave us a day off to see the color of the UP one day in the fall. A group of us drove up to Fort McLain and Copper Harbor. We drove up in Wayne Miller Carlson's (from Escanaba, I wish I knew where his parents are) Mustang (May he rest in peace) with Dennis, his girl freind and now wife Karen Johnson. It was cold and gray but we had a great day. Even bumped into Jerry DeMott and Jane Hreca, Jerry's dad had a photo studio in Houghton.
Well did I get that right SLJ?
