The view from L'Anse across to the Baraga side. Eight years ago on the Pasty Cam we were beginning to show comparisons from the same perspective in different seasons.

Good Morning, Everyone! Snow Day here in mid-Michigan! We are under a Heavy Snow Warning, that was just now extended to 7 pm tonight. Our snow is back, after that early January thaw!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 06:40 am:

good morning snow here in Berkley also.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 06:50 am:

a m hill, yesterday you asked me about the term "cowabunga", it was a term that Charlie Brown's Snoopy from The Peanuts characters screamed in excitment.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 07:09 am:

and now for the rest of the story:

The word evolved from “kawabonga,” a word used by the character Chief Thunderthud on the United States children’s television program Howdy Doody in the 1950s. “Kawagoopa” was an all-purpose exclamation of the Tinka Tonka Indians, the fictitious tribe of Princess Summerfall Winterspring and Chief Featherman, and “kawabonga” was the equivalent exclamation of Chief Thunderthud, who was of the Ooragnak Tribe. By the 1960s, surfers who had grown up watching Howdy Doody adopted it for surfing use, turning it to “cowabunga.”

Another U.S. children’s television character, Cookie Monster of Sesame Street, began to exclaim “Kowabunga!” in the 1970s. (Note the “K” spelling. He used it during a Letter of the Day segment as an example of a “K” word. When challenged by Prairie Dawn that Kowabunga was not a word, he replied: “Yes, it word! [Prairie: What?] Yeah, yeah. It bit esoteric... [Prairie: eso-what?!] but it poetic in it own right.”) The character Snoopy from the Peanuts comic strip also made popular use of the word.

The word reached greater popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s when used by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Michelangelo, and in the early 1990s when used by Simpson family member Bart (contrary to the assertions of the Simpsons' producers that Bart had only ever said cowabunga on T-shirts and other merchandise[1], Bart used the exclamation in the Tracy Ullman shorts [2] and twice in the first two regular seasons[3][4] - all three times while skateboarding).

There was also a wrestler in the southern federation United States Wrestling Association that went by the name Cowabunga, as he portrayed a Ninja Turtle in full costume.

Dr. Zarkoff’s assistant, Munson, exclaims “Cowabunga!” in the movie Flash Gordon

Good morning everybody! I think we're supposed to be above zero again today. All the way into the 20's by the weekend. It's going to feel like we're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 08:11 am:

Thanks Davesou. I didn't know a lot of what you wrote about
cowabunga. It's a term I've been known to use.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 08:27 am:

Nice shots, but I like the second one better. I think I see the Baraga Best Western hotel on the other side of the lake in the first shot. I have stayed there a few times and it's a fairly decent motel.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 08:47 am:

The second picture is my choice also...I can visulize our Chaparral LE sitting in one of those slips!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 12:50 pm:

Apparently very few people clicked the Wikipedia ink immediately following a m hill (Lvcamnotes)'s original question in
yesterday's Cam Notes

Either that or there's a whole bunch of redundancy here today!

By Ray Eister (Eray) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 02:57 pm:

I would like to know where to look to get the total snow fall for the year so far up there in the Keweenaw.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 03:10 pm:

There's nothing beyond Sharon's deck on her webcam!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 03:43 pm:

Check John Dee's web site, where you can also find his Historical Weather charts.

(Click the above links.)

By paul (Pungvait) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 03:47 pm:

today's gazette sez 161 inches, plus about 6 today, plus it's falling at about 1 inch/hour

By Ray Eister (Eray) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 03:54 pm:

Is there anywhere to look to get the total snow fall for the year so far up there in the Keweenaw.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 04:11 pm:

Eray, check out George's Eagle Harbor Web, according to George, as of Jan.20th, the Jan. snowfall is at 45.5" and for the season as of Jan. 20th, 156.2"

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 04:18 pm:

Ray Eister (Eray):

Just in case you missed my post of 03:43 pm today. let me repeat myself:

Check John Dee's web site, where you can also find his Historical Weather charts. Of course you'll have to do a bit of arithmetic, to add up the 24 hour snow totals for the months of October through December (at the bottom of the page), plus the 24 hour snow numbers for each day in January).

(Click the above links.)

(Is there somethin' I'm missing here, or has everyone forgotten how to click on links?)

Hey, Russemmons, congrats on your night owl.

By Therese (Therese) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 06:25 pm:

"... Chief Thunderthud, who was of the Ooragnak Tribe" ... Is that an Aussie animal who moved to the northern hemisphere? ;} Thanks, Dave, for the cowabunga story. I didn't know the term had such an illustrious ancestry.

By a m hill (Lvcamnotes) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 06:31 pm:
