Another of my all-time favorites on the Pasty Cam from 8 year ago. What you don't see is Grizzly Adams to the left of the photo, scaring up the seagulls so that Jonathan could capture this shot :o)

By the way, if you're in the Copper Country next Monday, join us at the Hut at 7pm for one of the food-related events welcoming the Key Ingredients exhibition to Calumet. While the Hut will not be open on Monday for regular serving, we will have pasty samples after a brief presentation about the history of Pasty Central. Join us in the Keweenaw Room at 7pm.

Good Morning! I just got back from a vacation in the North Country (not quite to the U.P.) and brought back a ton of blackberries. They are very plentiful this year. I picked till my hands were bleeding (from the darned little thorns)

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 04:26 am:

Hey Good Mornin! Did I get it?

By Betty Paull Colborn,AZ (Betty) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 05:23 am:

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 06:33 am:

TGIF! Good morning! We are getting a little rain!!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 07:26 am:

Good morning everybody! Tomorrow we leave for da bridge. We're really getting excited now. Talked to Pennie last night about where to meet her for the fireworks. Also talked to her sweet little Abby. What an angel. It should be a great time.

Happy Anniversary to Laurie (ratherberiding) and Mr. Laurie!!!! (Again, hope I got the date right.)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 07:33 am:

Two minutes Russell, raining here in Berkley, took Precious to work and she was able to get in with out getting wet, when I got home it was a different story. If I would have had soap I wouldn't have to shower later today. It is slowing down right now so I should have waited for a while and wouldn't be wet. Shook off like a dog, on poor Jimmie the fat white cat sending him into a frenzy. Hope everyone else gets the rain also.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 08:03 am:

We got rain, heard they got large hail in Adrian. I have 2 co-workers without power, outskirts of Chelsea and Parker Rd area in Scio Twp. They had a rough morning with wells and no water to top it off. All I heard was rumbles and distant flashes of lightning. We need the rain!

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 09:38 am:

Good Morning! At last, much needed showers in central Indiana. Hope all have a marvelous weekend.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 10:02 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka, IN. We are to get rain today. Had some rain Wednesday evening--little over an inch and a little yesterday. The grass is nice and green once again. When it dries out it will be time for the mower again.
To those of you going to Mackinac area for the bridge celebration have a great time. Wish I could be there.
Have a great weekend.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 10:38 am:

I'd like to be on the road to the copper country today; the Dr. and I were planning on it. Unfortunitely, I was in a car accident Tuesday afternoon and just now getting over the effects. What's worse is that is was with the new car we were planning on driving up there with!! Hopefully I will have it back next Friday. If not, we'll just have to take our trusty little Neon up north; good news is we're still coming UP, just a week later.......

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 10:46 am:

Capt Paul, geez that is a bad thing with bad timing! Check into renting a car and head north! All those who are meeting up with others at Big Mac, safe travels to you and yours. Have a wonderful time!

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 11:26 am:

My goodness there's been three accidents involving us pasty friends lately. Mikie, Marianne & now Captain Paul. I hope everyone is healing up OK. I hope we don't hear of any more. Be careful on the road & watch out for the other guy.
I'm heading to de bridge with Renee tomorrow to meet Pennie & her Abby,,Deb, Ron & Kaye. Some friends we've met through pasty.com We've found we have alot in common so I'm sure we'll have a good time. Just wish some of the other friends were able to come but there's always next year. Drive safe everyone.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 11:32 am:

Paul were you hurt. We were in a Neon when we had our accident. I hope you will be able to stop in Berkley yet.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 12:04 pm:

Hi you all! I hope all of you who are going to the Big Mac Bridge festivities have a great, safe time this weekend!

Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes! I went to the neurosurgeon yesterday for a check up. I have to wear this hard shell "turtle" brace for 7 more weeks, and then he'll see where we go from there. It does allow me to sit up for short periods of time. I could not do that otherwise. And it should help the fractures to heal. But it is very hot and uncomfortable, especially under my arms. Oh well...

For the record, mine was a bad fall next to my Suburban, not a vehicle accident. There was no damage to the vehicle, just to me. (I had reached down to pick up a piece of paper on the ground, and I banged my head on the rear view mirror on the way back up. That threw me off balance, resulting in a freak, very hard fall to the ground, that fractured my L1 vertebrae in multiple places.)

Mikie and Capt Paul: I hope you are both recuperating well! My thoughts and prayers are with you both for a speedy and full recovery.

Maybe we should extend Cotton's warning to "Be Careful", or something?

Good afternoon, nice day with beautiful clouds and sunshine. We had a heavy(but rather short)rain last night but,so far,no rain today. It is just so good to be in the UP!
I wonder if someone could tell me the exact location of Fumee Falls. We are in Iron Mountain and I think the falls are near here.Any information would b e greatly appreciated.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 02:03 pm:

I am a worried parent and looking for information . Have you recently read about a section of the Torch Lake shoreline testing positive for unsafe levels of lead and pcbs?So- does that mean they are concerned only because the lake is low-thus exposing this section of sediment -which seems to mean if it is under water-that is OK?Is it really safe for our children to swim in that lake? I am truly concerned.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 02:33 pm:

That issue was addressed last night in the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette:

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 02:52 pm:

I saw that too, I took a picture of how low the lake was when I was up last month. i can't figure out how to post it since I am defective on the computer.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 04:32 pm:

Have a wonderful time, all you Pasty Cammers who are heading to
the bridge tomorrow. I will be there in spirit and will look for you
on WLUC TV, which I assume will be covering the event.

Oh yes, I remember taking the ferry. I loved it as much as I do the
bridge (the sight of which still brings a tear to my eye every time I
cross it) because it was the way UP, or the way down (and of course
tears of a different kind were/are shed for different reasons).

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 04:35 pm:

Thank yous for all the thoughts. It actually wasn't as bad as I intended it to be; surely nothing like what Mikie and Precious went through. I'm fine, just a bit stiff in the neck at times.

I was just backing out of the parking place, stopped the car, put it in D, and before I could move forward, WHAM!!! a lady in an Xterra driving "backwards" down the driveway plowed into my trunk. The best part about it; even though I was stopped and in D and she admitted to not looking before she backed up, according to Texas law, I am at fault because she had right-of-way. Have you ever heard of such a silly thing??? Luckily, I have a great insurance company that has already said it was 100% her fault based on the damage to the car, all $4300 of it....

Mikie: I sure am planning on stopping in to Berkley. Now we can share war stories ;-)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 06:53 pm:

Good, Paul I was worried you were hurt worse then you are. I grew up on Torch Lake and my Mom always told me that the lake was too dirty to go into. I wouldn't swim in that lake for any reason. I heard that sometimes when it is windy and the waves are up cables from the dredge rise to the surface and make boating there dangerous. Heard it from old pal Speedy Jenks so it might not be true.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 07:06 pm:

Marianne Y,thank you for the info on Fumee Falls. I have seen them and love the roadside park where they are located...just didn't realize they were Fumee Falls!
We drove to Crystal Falls today and walked the Paint River Boardwalk. Beautiful place . I love it UP here! Wish everyone who loves and misses it were Up here too!
