This week has been ideal for discovering the extreme north/east of the Keweenaw Peninsula. One forecast I heard actually called for snow in some areas of the U.P. overnight, and there were frost warnings everywhere. Must be rough on the black flies, because they have been staying away in droves, giving late-Spring hikers the most comfortable conditions.

If we all had time today, we could trek to this spot where Robert Goniea shot his wife Kathalina (friendly fire with a camera lens, of course). There was another kind of shot just a few feet from here - a space shot - back in January of '71. It is a favorite destination of both rocket buffs and lighthouse lovers, as you can see Gull Rock in the distance.

I would love to see this. But then, there are so many things that I would love to see.

How perfect. I would certainly rather be sitting there on that rock right now than sitting here at work! ;-)

By Justin Johnson (Tinksno) on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 - 10:06 am:

Boy i sure miss home. I think I have sat right where she is sitting, remember to watch your step.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 - 10:11 am:

I've sat on that rock, but not for 15 years or so. I found my best agate just to the left of it. I'm glad to know it's still there.

Is the new software done yet so we can see current photos in the archives?

Yes, Don, follow the links to the Gallery, select any name, and you will see the new format. Many nice features, and the search function actually works!

Does anyone know if High Rock Bay is accessible by car this year? We tried last year, but got turned around by tire-sized pot holes on Mandan Road. Will try again this August, if we have a reasonable chance of getting there.

Michael RUdzki (Kf8bex) I found this site from a few years ago. I might help you ......won't hurt to read it anyways.

OMG! Talk about a suprise! Checking the pastycam and finding your wife's pic would definitely qualify.:)
Wish we could get back up to high rock bay and the rocket range soon but gas and time restraints will keep us away for a while. We will however be doing St. Ignace state park in two weeks. Hopefully I'll have some interesting pics of that area to share in the album.

My parents & I walked to that rock in 1958 or 59,
my Dad took photos (slides). I should dig them out.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 - 03:35 pm:

I was out there 31 years ago. Wow! That seems like yesterday.

By David Haykus (Dhaykus) on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 - 09:52 pm:

How hard is to bike out there? I hope to get back up this summer and it's somthing I've wanted to do since I heard of the rocket range(rockets have been a hobby of mine for a looong time.)
