Ashlee Harvey and crew, headed up to Esrey Park, just past Eagle Harbor to check out what the ice along Lake Superior's shores was up to. You can see by the photos she sent in that it's a bit unusual in the sense that it's all broken into pieces, similar to icicles that hang from the eaves of your house. Looks like they discovered a shoreline covered with crystals and I imagine it made a pretty neat clinking sound as the waves washed up over the edges. Ashlee says it was a cold afternoon, despite the sunshine, but also said what a blast they had and how "cool" it was too!

I walked out on the ice one spring when there were upright slabs jammed in to the flat surface underfoot. The slabs caught the spring sunlight and were turning into crystals like those pictured on the beach. Needless to say I didn't walk out very far. They did make tinkling sounds when the slabs were struck and they fell apart into long crystals. Must be something to do with pressures arrayed while changing state from frozen to liquid

The Lake looks a little chilly! Whoo, hoo. Mercy, it has that deep dark color about it.

That's gutsy, walking on ice like that! If it were my family, I would make sure that they only walked on ice on water that wasn't much more than ankle deep and that they had good waders on! I'm glad to see that the little boy at least has boots & heavy plastic gloves on for some protection, and they are close to shore. There have been sooo many stories here of the US Coast Guard having to go out to risk their lives to rescue people who were out on ice that broke off or whatever in too warm temperatures this year.

From a scientific standpoint, it is interesting watching the ice as it goes through the various stages of melting. Thanks for the pictures, Mary & Aslee.

That really is strange looking, but so cool!

Brrrr....it looks rough and cold and unforgiving. I will look from a distance (actually about 540 miles) until it warms up and the ice is gone. Maybe I will stick my foot in in August...maybe.

Like the crystals. What! Open water and no swimmers?

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 - 04:35 pm:

Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long), by August the lake will be nice! You will be able to go swimming in it then. Just to beat the heat!
Its really a refreshing swim.

I was actually in the Lake last August and it was the warmest that I ever remember. It was quite nice. I hope to do it again this year. :-)

Cindy, You will be glad you did it again!!

Thanks for the great shots of the ice on the shoreline. What a nice thing for you to do for us Iowans who would like to be there but can't. I "travel" to your site every day.
