Photo from 'Rowdy'

Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 06:52 am:

Pasty Cam regular "Rowdy" dug this gem out of his Shoebox last week, and passed it on to Neil Harri, who forwarded it to our weekday editor Mary Drew, who handed it off to me. Less than a month away from the Keweenaw's Clean Snowmobile Challenge, this is a classic reminder of the innovation and creativity born in the Copper Country over the years. It reminded me of some other examples of snow travel which have appeared in the Pasty Cam Archives:

My personal thanks to all the Pasty Cam contributors who have taken time to scan old photos and send them our way. Having scanned dozens of our Shoebox Memory shots over the years, I can appreciate the effort, equipment and patience involved.

The long-awaited upgrade to our Pasty Cam Guest Gallery hit a snag last week, as somebody made one wayward click which is taking hours to undo. (I won't name any names, but her initials are Mary Drew). We hope to have the 'new and improved' Gallery hitting on all cylinders in time for the start of the 10th year of the Daily Pasty Cam, which arrives in a few days on March 1.

Speaking of MD, thanks to all who have pitched in to help Mary's nephew Kevin cope with a very difficult challenge. I'm sure the care and concern of friends we have met through these pages are a real encouragement to Kevin.

Stay warm. Have a good week :o)

Wow do these photo's bring back memories. I wish I was waist deep in snow looking forward to a ride on my friends snowmobile. But alas I am here with a severe cold in Florida. Go figure

Good morning everyone. Quite a collection of old snowmobile pics. When we lived in Fulton back in the 60's, there was a guy who had a bright yellow Ski-Doo snowmobile with the engine mounted on the back like the one in the picture above, and you could take the skis off and put wheels on the front!!! Guess that option didn't meet with much public demand. Have a great Sunday.

Those look like fun. Wonder how many are still around.

By Pete Wilberding (Peshtigopete) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 08:17 am:

It's snowing down here in Peshtigo harder than in a long long time and according to Weather Bug we've had a 33 MPH gust. It's a great way to spend a Sunday except that I still have to get to the store for the papers.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 08:38 am:

These days it seems that a snowmobile must go over 60mph or its deemed worthless. I remember my grandfather had an old 1973 ski doo 10hp gem that topped out at a whopping 12 mph. Now that's built in safety !!!!! What a blast to ride too ! Even a 6 yr old could handle that speed !!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 08:40 am:

The old snowmobile pics bring back memories. Had a ride on the Huski (ironing board machine)with my dad one time. My dad had the old red one (can't remember the name of it) and used to take me out on it. Talk about a rough, bumpy ride on those old jalopies. They served the purpose at the time for snowmobilng enjoyment.

Since two o'clock yesterday we in Oglesby, Il have been witnessing the worse ice storm that I have seen in years. Winds, rain, sleet and snow. Today the temp. went up a few degrees and still raining and turning everything to slush. Please Spring, get here soon.

Freezing rain here in Columbus, Ohio. Went to see the OSU/Michigan hockey game last night and had to leave early because the roads were getting very slick. It was a mess here for awhile. The sun just came out now and the ice is turning into slush!!!! The ugly snow from last week is dirty---we used to call it "snirt" when we were kids. Dirt and snow.!!!! Also, the big chunks of snow from the cars on the road was referred to as "car poop"!! Oh to be a kid again.!!!

I didn't make it but they had the 15th Annual Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show in Naubinway and Engadine on February 16 and 17. According to the Les Cheneaux Weekly Wave they had 226 sleds in Naubinway. They are raising money for the Top of The Lake Snowmobile Museum they are building in Naubinway.

69 Toot. I was there with the airline at that time and recall the name but can't picture it anymore. There were a lot of odd vehicles there at times. The last photo today is one I submitted a few years ago. I can recall watching that thing actually move sideways. It was being tested for a Canadian firm.

In 1964 we had a crew under professor Baer at the Keweenaw research center {MTU} ; TESTING SNOW , FOR THE DENSITY with various size, shape of plates to see what could support vehicles on the snow.
