When referring to an enclosed harbor, you'll often hear the term breakwall used... meaning the wall that breaks the waves before they have a chance to enter the harbor area. Lee Rowe caught the Marquette breakwall in action, doing its thing! You can almost see the ice forming in the water as it rushes up to the edge. The second shot shows the purpose for these breakwalls... to keep the waters within the harbor calmer than out in the open lake. That makes it easier for freighters like the Lee A. Tregurtha here, to unload/load without tossing and turning in the churning waves. I don't know about you, but looking at these shots makes me shiver!

Good Morning from brighton

Great picture , two more months till im back in copper harbor .

By John from the prairie on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 08:12 am:

Last time I visited the ore docks in Marquette the Lee A.
Tregurtha was parked right where she's pictured here (although
the weather was nicer)

The photographer seems to be standing just this side of the
locomotive on display.

That water sure looks cold!

By Nanc, VA on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 08:21 am:

Mornin' from cold , but NO SNOW (DRAT) Virginia.
My girl made it safely home, didn't bring any snow , she left it all there apparently.
How much is on the ground?
That lake sure looks angry. Maybe it didnt' get what it wanted for Christmas.
Happy New Year to ya'll Yoppers. ( Yep we do say ya'll, try hard not to though)

By Dave, Laurium on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 09:06 am:

Well, looks like we're having a heat wave in the Copper Country. Great pics today. I was down at Calumet Waterworks yesterday, and I think the lake looked as cold as I have seen it in sometime, here is a sample....

Good Morning to all, great pics that show the power of nature as we are seeing this day with 21,000 being killed by water/waves in Asia..Lee has been submitting pictures to the WWW.BOATNERD.COM site for a few years from the Marquette area.

By Barb in Jacobsville, MI on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 09:31 am:

Hey Dave in Laurium,

We wanna see MORE! Can you put them up on your album site
at Pasty? And of course, post the URL here?!?!

By rko on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 09:32 am:

What happened to my post early this morning?

By Dave, Laurium on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 09:39 am:

I will load some more pics in my gallery later from my trip along the Cliff Drive and Waterworks yesterday and post the URL later, but for now I think I am around page 36 of the gallery ... thanks for the interest...

Great Pic's today! My favorite, the freighter's, and the big lake roaring, and Marquette, well that's just a bonus! Can't beat it, wish I was there right now watching it all!

By rko on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 10:31 am:

Anyone know where the deer go that are on Presque Isle in Marquette in the winter???
thanks
Roger

By Sarah, MI troll in FL on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 10:55 am:

This might be the wrong forum, but my brother saw a "Puffin" bird on Pine Lake near Plainwell. Audobon society said there have been no reported sightings of Puffin in Michigan. Thought if anyone saw any, they would be on this site.

Dr. Nat and Hubby, just wanted to wish you guys a Happy New Year. I am going down to Ann Arbor Wednesday but don't know if I will get to the GLI.

One of our Pasty Cam viewers in the Marquette area sent this shot of the Marquette Harbor at noon today. It was taken with the lighthouse video cam...Thanks Don! :->

To Nanc, VA:
Here in Painesdale we have 30 inches on the ground and a year to date total snowfall of 94.25inches. These numbers are called into the Daily Mining Gazette and used as the snowfall for Houghton County. I am sure Keweenaw County is close to these numbers. Marquette just got a Christmas Day snowstorm and I bet their snowfall is ahead of Houghton County now.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 04:23 pm:

It's really nasty here in San Jose. Heavy rains, strong winds, damp, cold, only 58º. Supposed to have rain all week, even the wind chimes sound angry.

By Karl from Cadillac on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 04:38 pm:

Is it my imagination or does the ship look like it has a set of teeth and lips...showing "it's COLD"? Great pictures, love to see wave action on the big lake!

By Down State Dave on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 08:21 pm:

rko -- I think the deer on Presque Isle go Miami for the winter. So do Santa's reindeer when they are through with their Cristmas gig. I think the two herds party together on the beach there. The Presque Isle deer always brag that their winters are tougher than the ones at the North Pole. ;>)

By Sam downstate on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 08:41 pm:

Hi,
The breakwall at the top looks like the one I used to swim at when I lived in Calumet. It doesn't look like it is doing it's job in that picture! I don't think I would have gone swimming that day.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 10:22 pm:

Hei, Karl from Cadillac, what you're seeing is the ship's frames behind the bow plates. They get pushed in and bent from going through the ice in the spring and winter. The frame sections on my Chevy p/u box show through like that after I hauled road gravel for the driveway. Many loads. You should hear the noise the ice makes in the ship.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 10:25 pm:

Hei Lee, nice 'action' shot of the wave and the breakwall. Have wallked that 'wall many times but not on a day like that.

By Mary Ann, WY on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 12:24 am:

Just want to say I think the photos today are great. It is always nice to see photos of Lake Superior and also the ships. Makes me homesick.

By Becca on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 07:02 am:

Thank you for the Marquette shots.

By Jason, Knoxville TN on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 11:35 am:

I went to college at NMU in Marquette, and I used to love to watch the lake when it was stormy. Looks a wee bit too cold for my skin now though. Nice to look at the pictures and get none of the chill though.

By Dave Thatcher Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 10:32 pm:

I really enjoyed the pictures. I visit this website from time to time as I have a friend here in Cincinnati from the UP and he reminds me to see what is going on up there. I hope to visit the area this summer and see for myself this beautiful area. My friend still owns a place there and has invited me to join them for a couple days this summer. Keep up the good work.
Maybe this summer I will finally be able to try a pasty. I can hardly wait!
Best Wishes and Happy New Year to all in the UP!

Dave, you don't really have to wait until next summer :o) The January pasty delivery schedule is now online.

By Pam Traver, Fruiport, MI until retirement on Friday, December 31, 2004 - 08:15 am:

One of the many BEST places on Earth in the UP - Marquette and Keweenaw being my favorite on Earth.... Walking/skiing the Island (Presque Isle) in MQT anytime of year and breathing that Lake Superior air anytime of year.... It doesn't get any Better than THAT!!!! Peace

By Barbara, southern IN on Sunday, January 2, 2005 - 12:38 am:

The photo from top of the lighthouse in Marquette is great. Do they have a website for their webcam? If so I would love to have the web address to add to my favorite places in and around Marquette and the U.P. that I visit regularly.
