I trust the internet most of the time, and I went to google and it told me all about the U.P's snow. But it's not enogh so I was wondering if maybe you guys could tell me all about it AND what you do during the winter? I'm going to move up there in december all the way from New York/ I know nothing at all about the UP!

By Protowhatever, Calumet, MI on Thursday, November 25, 2004 - 08:15 am:

Where in the UP are you moving to?

By Jo Ann, Hancock on Thursday, November 25, 2004 - 08:18 am:

Come on UP Bridget. Welcome to God's country.

By anita, lp on Thursday, November 25, 2004 - 08:22 am:

That's great. You will enjoy the UP. I was raised in the UP and would not have it any other way. When I moved from there to the "big city", it was a culture shock. So, it might be a culture shock for you moving there. The people are great, the beauty of nature has a very calming effect. It is a great place to live. I do not live there now because my spouse does not like the cold and snow.

Bridget, this is the place for your info on the U.P.

By Therese from just below the bridge on Thursday, November 25, 2004 - 09:42 pm:

Bridget, I live just south of the Mackinac Bridge, near the tip of Michigan's lower peninsula. We don't get the snow that the UP does, but 150 to 200 inches is still respectable.

Buy snowshoes or cross-country skis and DONT STAY INSIDE. Get out (properly dressed) and enjoy the weather. Go for a hike in the woods. Take up photography or painting. Read all those classics you havent had time for. Write poetry. Repaint the house. Learn to play euchre. Sit and listen to your own thoughts. Call NY friends long-distance and casually mention the snow depth outside your window. Impress them with your resourcefulness. Go warm up by splitting wood at the wood pile.

Let winter slow you down and dont sweat it. The cold doesnt restrict life so much as concentrate it. It forces you to stop and really look at the world. I spend many evenings clearing my path and drive, stopping to watch the new snow fall around me. It is so quiet, so peaceful! I fill the bird feeders evey afternoon after work, as the sun sinks down behind the hills, and I watch the deer across the road waiting for me to go inside so they can empty them. Put up white outdoor lights so you can watch the wildlife at night, even if it's only deer and snowshoe hares.

Thank you for all the wonderful comments, it probably really help me when I come. Also protowhatever.. im moving to eagle harbor. I bought a little cozy cabin there on Lake Superior.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, November 25, 2004 - 10:38 pm:

Bridget,

Give us a call at Pasty.NET when you move up, 337-0569, and we'll see if your cabin is in range of our high-speed wireless in Eagle Harbor, where we have several access points. No need to give up broadband just because you're moving to the northwoods.

Bridget,I have lived in the UP for some time now. In fact a short 14 miles from where you are planning to move to.I have to ask you if you are a native New Yorker? Are you from New York City or another part of the state?
Are you used to "big name"concerts, fine restaurants, stores open until the wee hours of the morning? You may not find them as easy to get ...but they are available.
The UP is a serene, beautiful, and tranquil environment. You will be entering a different world ,in this special corner of God's country.Good luck on the move...and most importantly enjoy this very unique experience!!

By Rose on Saturday, November 27, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

Well, I moved from the big city and I found that great concerts are at the Rozea Center, fine restuarants are everywhere..UP food is fabulous, and there are two stores open 24 hours if you wish to shop, but watching the sunset, the stars or northern lights is much better. I don't miss the city one bit ..I have gained so much !

By Bridget , NY on Saturday, November 27, 2004 - 12:49 pm:

I am a native New Yorker, I was born and raised there. Throughout my life I never thought once that I would ever leave New York, but now I am on my way to Michigan. I've only visited Michigan once, and that was for my cousins graduation. I live in New York City and I used to work next to the World Trade Centers... but after the terrorist attack, I decided to own a boutique
( with different kinds of designers fashions, like Dior, Gucci, Prada etc.) But after 4 years of that I decided to leave this fast paced work, and move to a more nature, scenic enviornment. So I hope I can adjust to this, and I can't wait to meet all you "YOOPERS"

By maijaMI on Saturday, November 27, 2004 - 01:02 pm:

Oh, Bridget: please be prepared for a HUGE culture shock. Since you are coming from NY city, this is going to be a whole different world. Give yourself some time. Don't give up.

By Suzy/MN on Saturday, November 27, 2004 - 09:20 pm:

Therese,
I love your advice! If people would just get out in it they would be much happier all around. I long for the day when I can do that.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, November 27, 2004 - 10:42 pm:

Bridgett, NY: Take all the advice you can. I would love to bring you some date nut bread to welcome you and help you unpack the dishes, but I'm stuck here in TX and the closest I get to UP is daily website visits. Next summer we'll be in the UP.
