Take a walk in just about any U.P. forest this time of year and you're bound to come upon a little river like Peter Tormala did here. The fresh fallen snow encroaches the river edge, but doesn't stop the water from just meandering along it's way. Making for a nice peaceful place to stop and listen to the world around you. With Thanksgiving just behind us and Christmas looming before us, this scene reminds me of the song, Over the river and through the woods. I'm not certain which version is the original, but I found a Thanksgiving version AND a Christmas version too, so whichever holiday you prefer, you can have this tune playing in your head!

Looks like the creek that runs by our camp in the suburbs of Donkin.

Something tells me I've probably seen this river before...the backwoods of Toivola. :)

This is the kind of image I look forward to seeing with every trip into the woods in the winter. What a wonderful way to just relax a bit when the pace of the holiday rush soon is upon us. Right now, a virtual walk in the woods will have to do. Thanks for the memories.

I agree with the Yooper in Westland! This looks like a stream in Toivola - perhaps the Elm?
It's beautiful though. I heard they have 8-10" up there!

I always wondered where all those frozen fish in my supermarket came from. Now I know!

This river reminds me of the Yellow Dog, just Northwest of Marquette.

Love the picture of the creek, with the edges of the water just starting to freeze. Must be a storm in the area as I saw a webcam showing a freighter taking shelter (?) in the Iron Bay of Marquette.

Nice picture today. It's good to be back viewing the pastycam. I was on a business trip and then had to go down to Texas to be with my folks because my dad had open heart surgery.
Everything went well and I am finally back. I missed all the visions of the U.P. provided by all those talented photographers out there and all the lively discussions sparked by the pastycam.

It looks like the Montreal River, where it crosses the Lac La Belle Rd in Keweenaw County.

The river in photo could be Miners River near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, that i visited in 2000....

Hello from Mishawaka IN. I had trouble getting to this page. When I clicked on the Over The River picture on the home page it took me to Oct 15 2003. I tryed a couple times but it kept going to Oct 15 2003. I finally went to the Pasty Cam Archives to Nov 2004 and the 29th and finally got here. Am I in the twilight zone?

No, NKR, your not imagining things. This afternoon arouond 3:35 somebody hit a wrong button and set the WayBack machine to 10/15/03. We appear to be OK now.

As much as I love to look at "home" in the spring, summer and fall, I think I miss seeing it in winter most. Sigh.

Oh my aunt told me I have to tell you all where it is at, she said the suspense is so thick you could cut it with a knife! It is the Elm River in Toivola.

It may even be the Shiawassee River. Have you ever
heard of it? Don't think you'll find it in the U.P. tho.

Oh and p.s. I also thought I hit the twilight zone earlier today when my pasty home page brought me to October 15, 2003! So, there's lots of us who still have most of our marbles.

downstate don....I know the Shiawassee well...grew up one door away from it in Fenton. Lots of memories and stories. Lovely name. Great place to grow up. At least it was way back then. Everything changes...and grows. Then Fenton really was a small town (everything is relative!) of about 4000. It had almost doubled in size when I moved to Florida. It's much bigger now. Still some great spots, but getting way too urban sprawly. New word. :)

I liked both versions of the song--great pics and great webcam referrals. I noticed the bridge is back down. Is it that way for winter or will it go up and down a few times before the ice takes over?

Ah...the Mighty Shiawassee!!! The Shiawassee flows through the middle of our beautiful village of Chesaning. The Chesaning Showboat sails it's waters the second week of July each year. Chesaning is a beautiful place to live!

Judy, Chesaning, Susan, Fl. I know of both places.
Fenton and Chesaning. I lived in Holly and went to
Fenton often. Many good restaurants there. Includ-
ing the Fenton Hotel. I have friends that live in
Oakley, outside of Chesaning and often visit the
Shiawassee downtown where the bridge was erected.
Great towns...downstate.

I would think there may be some wonderful streams in Italy yet to be discovered by me. It was kind of you to write. I hope you can explore more marvelous things in Upper Michigan and perhaps open a little espresso place!

downstate don....did you go to Holly High School? If so, what year did you graduate? Were you ever involved in the "rock and goat" games? :)

I take full responsibility for being the spoil-sport and I apologize. The kid's English accent voices got to me. They were the same voices heard in the Rolling Stones song, "You can't always get what you want..." I mailed Peter and told him, "Oh, Pe-tah,you must tell us wheh this rivah is." A lousy imitation, I know, but it was effective.

attended school in the U.P. Just lived there for
about eight years. Had friends in Fenton. No, did
not participate in the games.

Wow! The photo of the stream reminds me of my treks on snowshoes from the campus of Mich Tech to the Pilgrim River. Those were some really special times to get away from the stress of campus life! Thanks for the refreshing memory -- wish I could go there now...

I agree with a couple of others.....looks like the Little Elm that flows behind my mother's (Jingo Wiitala Vachon)place in Toivola. As kids we loved following the creek to Short Falls pool and Long Falls. Although I have traveled internationally for years the Little Elm is one of my favorite of all places. Brings back fond memories of family and friends of years ago.
