What a cute little pumpkin, helping carve his own first pumpkin! Jerald Stukel supplies us with this shot of a winter crookneck sculpting tradition beginning for little Sebastian. Who, by the way, looks to be enjoying digging into the gooey mess! Some folks get pretty artsy with their chiseling of the squash, as shown in the second photo by Frederic Koski.

Big news in the Keweenaw is the SBC outage for phone lines and data lines into the region. That's why today's Pasty Cam is a bit late. Hopefully things will be back to normal for the football game tonight on Pasty.NET.

By Rachel, wishing she was at Little Betsy! on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 02:26 pm:

This is to the guys, I missed your conversations the last couple of days.

Sounds like you're all ready to go. Let me know if you need Adam to ship some ammo or heat packs up to Betsy! He wishes he could go, but he's already taking a week off around Dec. 1 for the birth of our LAST child.

I'm really jealous, hope you all have a good time and keep the truck out of the pond this year, eh?

By Sue, Calumet on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 02:58 pm:

Just Kidding, Adam & Scott need to be baptised in the keystone bay beaver pond! Riding in Marty's 4x4 that is sure to happen. Hope you and Sarah are doing well, pop out the next kid, send your men!

Nephew Ben @ LB, if you tried to add to today's banter, Mary deleted you, try again, and type nice things that us yoopers can apprecitate!

PS. Bring me U.P. some 3030 shells,Maija how ya doin?

By Therese from just below the bridge on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 04:07 pm:

A really nice carving of Charlie Brown and his best friend. I harvested my 'bumper crop' of pumpkins yesterday: three vines' worth that grew from a mini Jack-be-little pumpkin tossed out last fall for the squirrels. They took over the approach to my front steps so I was stepping around squash leaves all September. I got 15 tiny ones, a few medium and one carveable-sized one which rotted already. The squirrels will enjoy its guts, and next year I will I hope have more freebie vines coming up.

I also have a sunflower head about 20 inches across that came up from missed sunflower seed in the birdfeeders. Serendipity rears its lovely head in my garden!

By Uncle Chuck, LB on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 04:08 pm:

Joesyopper, don't mess with my niece!

By MKW $BAY MI on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 04:29 pm:

A woman was asked by a coworker, "What is it like to be a Christian?"
The coworker replied, "It is like being a pumpkin. God picks you from
the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then he
cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the
seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc., and then He carves you a new smiling
face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to
see."

By Carla, Michigan on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 04:51 pm:

Unrelated question.. but I thought this might be the quickest way to get an answer.
We are planning on going to MTU's Winter Carnival... the week AFTER the official carnival. Are the statues/etc. still 'up' then or do they destroy them?

By appreciate it on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 05:13 pm:

Thanks joseyopper:)

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 06:46 pm:

The Baraga Vikings and North Dickinson Nordics are preparing to do playoff battle tonight in just a few minutes over at Pasty.NET. The earlier outage of data services to the U.P. has been corrected, and streaming audio again is flowing to U.P. alumni throughout the country.

By Ms. Katie on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 06:51 pm:

Okay folks in the know...who or where is Little Betsy? I kinda' have a hunch it's somewhere by Bete Greis(sp.)?

By Therry OH on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 07:19 pm:

Is that kid a little chubby one!

By Candy, CA on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

Hi, Carla, the statues will stay up until they start to thaw or are totally trashed by kids playing on them. The week after Carny is a good time to visit. Have fun, but bring toasty clothes -- it's really chilly up there then!

By ben, little betsy on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

Chuck why would i bring you some 30-30 shells when i have a different cannon now? i dont shoot anything less then 180 grain 300 mag shells. i dont think you can quite handle the power of that caliber. what night is the deer hunters ball? im looking forward to a couple cold PBR's at the gay bar, or are we going to head down and win some money in barega?

Just wanted to remind everyone about the "Ghost Train and Haunted Depot" program on the Lake Linden & Torch Lake Railroad on the Houghton County Historical Museum campus - M 26 in Lake Linden. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and guests will be able to ride on the railroad, then once back at the depot, they'll be able to choose from an assortment of refreshments and historical games, including a contest to guess the number of "poison apples" in a barrel.
There is a cost to cover the expense of operating the train: Adults - $3; Children 6-12 - $1; Children under 6 - free.

Ghost Train!

By maijaMI on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 08:45 pm:

Uncle Chuck: I'm doing just fine. The last several were not the best weeks of my life, and am still dealing with the inevitable "business" of losing a second parent. Surprised to find out how different it is from losing the first~~great sense of emptiness. But much about it was truly heartwarming, including comments from pasty folks.

Incredible weather the day of the service in Calumet, your first wind-ice/snow storm. Hardy folk came out, though. Makes memories.

Thanks so much for asking.

By CP, LB on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 08:55 pm:

By cheryl mi on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 08:56 pm:

Hunters in Betsy, Good luck in your season, please use email to correspond to each other. I don't think Pasty. com was made for personal messages like you have had for the past few days. How about it Chartlie & Mary?!!!

Cheryl,

As the number of daily visitors to the Pasty Cam has increased, the variety of topics and conversation has also expanded. Beginning in December our format will be enhanced, to keep the focus of "Cam Notes" on the daily picture, and also provide a flexible weekly forum for additional interaction on other topics and messages to friends.

By Uncle Chuck on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 09:06 pm:

MaijaMI, only time will heal your pain, then I beleive the good memories will take care of you,we wish good things for you!

By maijaMI on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 09:12 pm:

Not that I disagree with you Cheryl, but if someone does not post their email address, how can the rest of us respond to the person? Such as the very kind comment to me from "Uncle Chuck." He's not my uncle; I don't know him. But I really appreciated that he asked how I was doing. If his post was blue-highlighted, I would have responded to his email.

Am hoping my comment to him does not get deleted, even though I agree it was personal.

Maija,

Beginning Monday you will find our new enhanced daily/weekly discussion format provides a convenient method for such personal interaction, while allowing the daily Cam Notes to remain focused around the daily picture. Stay tuned!

cheryl mi Sorry for trying to share the love we feel for the u.p. with others. didnt think we offended anyone but sorry to bother ya

By Uncle Chuck, LB on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 09:25 pm:

Cheryl MI, like Marty said, we love the CC, and talking about it, and if we can make someone smile or even laugh at our comments, I feel its worth it!

By uncle ben,up on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 09:29 pm:

cheryl mi, I agree with you totally, maybe this should be called the Little Betsy site. This site should not be used for personel messages on a regular basis.

Marty, Uncle Chuck, and Uncle Ben - ditto on what we mentioned above to Cheryl and Maija. Beginning in December the focus of "Cam Notes" will be directed to the daily photo, and our new weekly discussion area will provide you with a flexible format to interact on other topics.

By Little Betsy on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 09:47 pm:

Little Betsy gang et al....for myself, have been enjoying your notes and will miss them, but everything changes. Hope the new format will be as much fun as this one. I can tell I'm getting older....change is not as exciting as it used to be! :) Have a great time when you get there, stay safe, and think of all of us displaced or wannabe yoopers!

By downstate don on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 12:24 am:

Thanks Yooper for the Halloween characters. Puts
a little color in the subject. Happy Halloween all

Little Betsy gang, I also have enjoyed your post's over the past few days. It brought back the feeling of excitement getting ready for opening day for me... Good luck and Rock on!

By danbury on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 04:17 am:

Looking forward to the new format. Hope it works out fine. Will be interesting to see since most discussions started directly related to a picture, albeit occasionally a little further fetched.

By danbury on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 04:20 am:

Oops, forgotten: good morning Yoopers! Have a happy hallow'een!
Not that I care (about halloween), but it sure seems to be some great fun to y'all!

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 05:53 am:

Hi Kevin and danbury. My but you are up late.

Beginning next week, this is a good example of postings you might see in what'sUP, the new area for notes, announcements and conversation. The following from RD, Iowa is typical of what you will continue to see in Cam Notes, comments related to the daily Pasty Cam photo:

By RD, Iowa on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 06:58 am:

In regards to pumpkin carving, is there going to be competition in Eagle Harbor again this year?

For news and views from the Harbor, see
George's Eagle Harbor Web

By Chuck, Little Betsy on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 09:28 am:

Susan,Fl. & Kevin,Ca. thanks for the kind words, We're like little kids when opening day comes around. Like to have a few yucks, and maybe make someone else laugh too. Hope the additional format still provides us a place or space to cut up a little. November 15th, is our holiday, take care.

By appreciate it on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 10:51 am:

Yes, Nov 15 is a big holiday in the UP and all interested really enjoy it. That's good. However, why don't all the people who want to carry on personal converstions among a few on any subject open a personal chat room so you can carry on with each other, in stead of a few trying to take over and monopolize this site with it? That way there would be no reason for the editors to do what they are doing. That is not what this site was created for. Also e-mail is for carring on personal conversation. Keep up the good work Pasty people. You have every right to edit the site and make it enjoyable for all. Thank You.

When the new what'sUP format becomes available, these Pasty Cam Notes will again be dedicated to feedback about the featured photo, AND there will be another area for announcements, conversations, other topics, and general interaction.

Thanks for that. The personal chit-chat with references that didn't mean squat to other people was getting out of hand, (in my opinion).
