If you are in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, then it's time to take a break the way Joyce Tormala winds down her busy times. That would be with a trip to the shores of Lake Superior and, since you might not be able to do just that right now, Joyce has provided us with the next best thing! This is a shot of the Little Elm River where it joins Lake Superior...a joining of the small and the mighty, you might say!

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 07:00 am:

Love the pic!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 07:16 am:

Love it! Where exactly is it?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:01 am:

Yes, Mary, where is this? It looked a little like Misery Bay, but mind
you, I've only seen that once and I'm sure things look very different
in winter.

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:14 am:

I'm guessing this picture was taken in Eagle River.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:24 am:

It does look like Eagle River, but I thought that river was Eagle River. Could definitely be wrong, but there are so many places UP there that look like this that it could be any place.

By Becky Edwards (Becky) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:34 am:

Looks like the Tobacco also - looks wonderful. And thanks guys for those sign pics the other day.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:35 am:

Beautiful picture! This picture is taken in the Agate Beach /Misery Bay area. This is the Little Elm and just down the beach is the Big Elm.
Beautiful beaches to take a leisurely stroll on. With the balmy temps we are predicted to get today, that probably would be a nice stroll today.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:46 am:

Beautiful shot, we've been there it's a lovely place. Is that a fresh water porpoise out there?Just kidding.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:47 am:

Is that one of those rare freshwater sharks in the picture?

By Dotsie Salani Stewart (Suna) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 09:02 am:

Beautiful picture. Doesn't look like December in the Copper Country.

God Bless Bea Thornton who died on Monday. She was such a gentle "lady".

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 09:04 am:

Thanks Babyseal. I thought it might be because there was one on there last summer. It looked the same.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 09:13 am:

The distance between the Misery Bay park and Agate Beach is a little over 3 miles. If you walk NE from the Misery River you come to the Little Elm.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 11:05 am:

Isn't there a story about a fur trapper spending the night on Misery Bay? It was supposed to be the most miserable time for him, hence the term "Misery Bay".

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 12:06 pm:

Oooooh, my favorite beach!!! Thanks Joyce.

Maybe that is paco looking toward the horizon:)
Really, it is a large pc. of driftwood that has been there for years.

By Mel, Kansas (Mehollop) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 02:16 pm:

Has anyone there along the Portage spotted the research vessel Blue Heron during the last couple days? I got a message from a friend of mine that works on her that they're laid up for a few days due to hard weather on the lake, and they can't make the transit back to Duluth until it lays back down.

If anybody knows where she's docked at the moment (Houghton waterfront, Tech docks, Lily Pond?), I'd appreciate the info. A picture would be even cooler - I know you all love to run around with your cameras.

Thanks!

Mary Drew says: This is a shot of the Little Elm River where it joins Lake Superior...a joining of the small and the mighty, you might say!
It is the Little Elm River in the same vicinity as Agate Beach/Misery Bay area.

Does this help?

Little Elm River

Lake Superior shore from Misery Bay to Little Elm River and Stanton Twp Park.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 05:03 pm:

Ya know what's really kinda strange? When we went to see Agate Beach, it was a camping resort. Did we go to the right place?

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 05:17 pm:

Campgrounds, not a resort. I have camped there before, its a gorgeous place to camp!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 05:37 pm:

For some reason, I thought Stanton Park was near Freda.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 05:58 pm:

Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper):
"I thought Stanton Park was near Freda."

Well is, kinda near - Freda's about 8.5 miles NNE of Stanton Part, as the crow flies, further by road.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 06:09 pm:

Thanks, but for some reason I thought it was closer. Shows you what I know. Haven't spent a lot of time in that neck of the woods but would sure like to. Uncle has a camp down on the lake at Freda so have spent a good amount there though.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 07:46 pm:

My favorite road signs are in Toivola.
One says "TOIVOLA-COMMUNITY OF HOPE". The next sign has an arrow that points direction to "MISERY BAY".

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 08:49 pm:

Blue Heron is docked in Houghton west of the bridge.

By Julie from Novi (Geeper) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 09:04 pm:

I know that stump. Where is the Big Elm River from the Little Elm?

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 09:59 pm:

Just on the other (north) side of Stanton Twp Park - less than a mile - is where the (Big) Elm and the South Branch of the Elm come together, practically right at the lake.

By Mel, Kansas (Mehollop) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 10:07 pm:

Thank you, Grace.

By Danielle Adams (Badkid) on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 10:11 pm:
