Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam kicked off a week of PastyVision, a panoramic camera. The October 11 shot was taken from the US-41 turnoff between Hancock and the Quincy Mine.

As for today, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Keweenaw, starting tonight and extending through Friday. According to the warning, storm totals will reach two feet of snow over mush of the Keweenaw. Wax up those skis!

First PostMorning!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 06:56 am:

That really is a great looking courthouse, isn't it? The colors are spectacular!

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 06:58 am:

Mornin'

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 07:03 am:

Just found out it's already snowing in the MPLS/St Paul area. Just hope it doesn't make it's way 60 minutes northwest of there cuz that's where I am. YIKES!!!

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 07:22 am:

Man, I miss Houghton! I must be sick to keep coming back here to give myself sweet misery.

Well, the hubby is so happy. A lifelong Tiger fan! Hope they go all the way!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 07:40 am:

What a glorious weekend we had in the UP. About that snow
though...maybe that's just a tad too early. Just sign me: Sorry to
be out of the UP, but always thankful to have been there.

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 07:54 am:

Morning All!!!

GO TIGERS! WHAT A GAME!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:10 am:

Sharon's journal says 1 to 2 feet of snow by Friday morning with highest amounts in the Painesdale to Mohawk area, I think. I usually see some amount of snow when I'm UP for my color tour, but this year it was temps in the 70's!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:12 am:

Go Tigers! What an exciting game. Go Verlander!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:22 am:

Sure sounds like all you UP in the U.P. are in for a "October Dumper" of snowstorm!! Stay safe! I'll be taking it in via webcams.

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:28 am:

When I was a student at MTU in the mid-to-late 80's, we had some snow in the first week of October every year that I was there. Just a flurry or two, no accumulation to speak of. It would generally come and go throughout October and then begin accumulating in November. There would be "some" snow on the ground when we headed south for Thanksgiving break, and "lots" on the ground when we got back. Then of course it stayed that way (or more accurately, increased to "lots more") until spring.

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:40 am:

Wish it would snow in Illinois. Every year it's just a teaser. If we do get snow, it's never like the UP powder! Can't wait to move up there, 3 years and counting down!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:43 am:

Good luck with your surgery today Fran!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:55 am:

Joan Sinkler..may I ask if your dog, the pic in your profile, is a Westie or a wheaten Scottie?

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 09:13 am:

Hey Dean! A little play on words "mush", in your weather forecast!

Go Tigers!!!!!

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 09:32 am:

Hi Janie T (Bobbysgirl)
He's a Westie, his name is Joey and he thinks he's a German Shepherd! Love that little guy!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 09:40 am:

Joanie, he's a cutie! I know all too well that "German Shepard" thinking, I have 2 Scotties. ;)

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 09:48 am:

Hi Janet T (Bobbysgirl)
Don't forget about the Doberman and your nine horses! Scotties are sweetie pies, that was my second choice. When the breeder showed "Joey" to me how could I not take the little 3 pound puppy! Where do you live, Janet? You gonna get the snow?

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 09:50 am:

Considering what Joey has for company he'd better have an attitude!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 09:56 am:

Joanie, I'm in eastern Iowa, we are suppose to see a few snowflakes mixed with the rainfall and freeze warnings for the next few nights. I should say we have one "tired" Doberman at the end of each day with the Scotts. Wish I had their spunkiness!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 10:06 am:

Joanie: Tell us about the room you're sitting in on your profile. I assume that is your house. What about all the pelts, etc.?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 10:10 am:

From the forecast, it looks like the "November Witch" cometh early to the Keweenaw this year!! 2 ft. of snow and possible 15-20 ft. waves over the next couple days; I'm making myself homesick!! :-(

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 10:20 am:

Hi Marsha!
The room I'm sitting in is not my home. It's Scott's Superior Inn in Ontonagon, MI. We try to get up that way every year. Don Scott, the owner, told us that was the biggest bear he ever shot. Not to worry, Don and his wife, Kathy eat everything that they hunt. I can justify that kind of hunting! Planning on moving to the UP in three years, can't wait! Illinois sucks!
Did you take that picture in your profile? It's gorgeous!

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 10:24 am:

Hi Rowdy!
That was funny! Bear or no bear, Joey is the king of the "Jungle"!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 10:32 am:

Joanie,
I'm jealous, only three years to go? I'm still trying to get to the UP permanently. Right now its just a few times a year. When I saw the picture in your profile I was going to ask if you decorate other peoples houses too.
Mr. Deb

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 10:32 am:

Nature is cleaning the UP with a blanket of snow, covering all the leaves that are on the ground.Boy am I glad they banned snow here in Berkley till late November. HaHa

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 10:38 am:

Deb!
We go to Ontonagon a few times a year, love the UP. That picture was taken at the lodge we stay at every year! I couldn't kill a mouse let alone a big ole' bear!!!
We're gonna retire up there, somewhere, in three years. Still looking around, love that Keewenaw area!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 11:11 am:

Joanie,
I have a penpal from Morris Illinois. She lives on Charles Rd. We started writing in 7th grade. Of course we email now.

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 11:42 am:

Hi JH!
What a small world, huh? Is it St. Charles Road? I think I know where that is, somewhere off of Rte. 47. How sweet, still penpals, or epals after all these years!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 11:46 am:

This message is for RCW from franinga. Her daughter says she came through the surgery with flying colors and everything's looking good. You can call her tomorrow but she can't talk today.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 11:47 am:

My husband is coming to Lansing to pick me up & bring me me home on Saturday.
Capt.Paul, how bout you & I trading places for the next few months? LOL I don't wanna go home to that snow, it's way too early. (Tho I don't think it'll last yet)
This time of year is when I start to pray for the safety of all of the sailors on those ore boats out there.
By the way, Fran who posts on here is having hip surgery today. Keep her in your thoughts & prayers.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 11:50 am:

Oh, I forgot to mention my great grandfather on my Dad's side helped to build the courthouse & also one of the houses across the street from the courthouse.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 11:54 am:

Joanie, Loved the picture in your profile. Looks like a nice place to stay but I think those animals might keep me from sleeping. LOL

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 12:01 pm:

Deb!
Where was your profile picture taken? Looks just beautiful, is it the UP?

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 12:27 pm:

WAY TO GO TIGERSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO TWO FEET OF SNOW!! WE AREN'T GOING TO GET IT! WE AREN'T GOING TO GET IT!! WE AREN'T GOING TO GET IT!!
CLICKING MY HEELS 3 TIMES AS I REPEAT THE PHRASE!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 12:29 pm:

Lahelo, And if it worked for the Little Engine that could, it'll work for you. LOL

Joanie, It's a picture of the Houghton-Hancock bridge. I think I'm going to change it soon though. Course, I'll need Mary's help with that as I'm so computer illiterate.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 12:31 pm:

Lol, I agree with Joanie; any state that has "ill" and "annoy" in it's name has to be bad!! ;-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 12:51 pm:

Joanie: My profile picture was taken out the front window of my cottage in Aura (on the eastern shore of Keweenaw Bay). I was just there last weekend, and won't be UP again until next June (May, if I'm lucky).

By Koke (Pjk3000) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 01:34 pm:

I work for the company that build the form die for the replacment shingles that were put up a few years ago. My son tuned in the die and ran out the production. I think he has one of them at his bench yet. They sure look nice on that roof. What a beautiful building.

By Joan Sinkler (Joanie) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 03:27 pm:

Hi Capt. Paul!
I never looked at Illinois in that perspective; ill-annoy, ha, ha, good one.
Whenever we come back home from the Up and cross into Illinois, here's what welcomes us home; Welcome To Illinois, get your toll money ready. Then after you pay to use the highways, they're strewn with litter, the air becomes foul-smelling and the sky seems to lose its bright blue color, along with traveling a highway that's in desperate need of repairs.
So, Captain, it is ill and very annoying!

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 04:07 pm:

That may be true, but there's no bridge!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 06:47 am:

Capt. Paul, Ill-annoy! Very good!
