Good Sunday morning, everyone.
First Post

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 08:59 am:

Good morning!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:24 am:

Good Morning everyone! 45 degrees and some overcast mixed with a little sun here in Houghton. Finally quit raining so we can get something done outside today. Make it a great day.

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:28 am:

Well, I thot I would add a note before we close down the
computer later today. Our big move north is coming early this
week. I sure hope all you folks are right in remembering how
nice it is (or was) to live in the U.P. I know you are right on how
lovely the U.P. is, but to live there after retirement? Of course,
we are only moving to Esky. What is Esky's annual snowfall?
Fifty inches? We can handle that all right. The Copper Country
or even Marquette would be another matter, I think. Almost all
our friends here think we are nuts to do this, but what do they
know, eh?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:43 am:

Charles, Good luck in your move. Yeah, the Copper Country and Marquette area would definitely be another matter. Iron Mountain/Kingsford is another area that doesn't get a LOT of snow. Their weather is a lot like ours here in MN. Anyway, we wish you luck and hope you're happy with your move. Sorry, can't tell you what the annual snowfall in in Esky. Don't know if they get the lake effect snow like the Copper Country does off of Lake Superior. I guess you'll just be surprised, eh?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:44 am:

For all you people east of us, the sun finally came out so maybe the rain will finally stop out your way too. Is the 2nd picture up there of Big Traverse?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:51 am:

Charles: You're a lucky duck. We'll be interested in hearing your
impressions of your first year of being a full time Yooper. You can
be a guinea pig for some of the rest of us, don't cha think?
Once you invite those down staters up to visit you, they'll KNOW
you're not nuts.

The climate must be warmer in Escanaba. I know people in
Ishpeming who speak about moving South--not to Florida, but to
Escanaba.

Happy 1st wedding anniversary to Paul & Margy Champagne of Ripley. May you enjoy many more!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:55 am:

Happy 40th Anniversary to Mikie and Precious. May you have many more years together.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 10:25 am:

Deb S both pictures are copper harbor, the one on the left is looking down from the slips where ducks and geese are always looking for a hand out. The one on the right is looking up at the Queen 3 now moored down by the bridge, the Queen 4 ties up parallel with the gift store seen in the picture.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 10:30 am:

Thanks Steve, Ya know, I didn't even realize they were two separate pictures there. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 10:48 am:

Morning All.
CharlesinAdrian-- Best wishes for you in preceeding me to retirement in the UP. People really think we're nuts retiring to the Keweenaw, but in all my travels I don't know where you can find a better slice of life. (anywhere in the UP would be great I just happen to be from the CC area). Please get the computer fired back up and give us Pastycamers a first person peek into that retirement life. Enjoy the day everyone!!

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 10:56 am:

WOW!! What a come-back by Notre Dame. Can't keep a good team down........

By Helen Milan (Hmilan) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 11:12 am:

I second the thoughts on the Notre Dame game...GO IRISH

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 11:24 am:

FJL and Helen, I was pulling for State. Was very disappointed when they blew that game. The Wolverines are my favorite, closely followed by the Spartans. I'm a Michigan person all the way.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 12:24 pm:

Mikie,Happy 40th Anniversay to you and Precious!! You two have raised a wonderful family. Congratulations. Fran

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 12:45 pm:

Charles,
Envy, envy, envy from me on your move to Esky. I grew up there, and if I could find work in the area, would return. We always talked about Esky being the banana belt, and called it Escabanana as kids.. Winters are not to bad, with snow in the 7 to 10 feet annual range. Summers are cool, with averages in the upper 60s and low 70s. It does get warmer of course, but usually there is a breeze. You don't need to get to far inland to warm up though. Winters are not to bad, but it does get cold, but usually it is not cold for long stretches. Autumn is spectacular, and my favorite time there. It was a great place to grow up. Of course, of I could, I would get a place a bit farther north, like say, Trimountain.

Congratulations on your new life, and take care of my hometown. I won't be seeing it for many years.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 01:10 pm:

Charles, Congrats on your move to da UP :) I believe that the winters in Esky aren't as severe as on the Lake Superior side. On my home page, I have both the St. Ignace weather and Beverly Shore's weather...and St. Ignace's temps and snowfall aren't too far off from what we experience on the southern shores of Lake Michigan.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 01:11 pm:

Charles in Esky (well soon enough eh!), I think you'll enjoy living there. I live in Gwinn & when we head to Escanaba in the winter we notice when we head south & go to as far as Rock or MacFarland the weather usually clears up. There's usually very little snow on the ground. I think Eky has pretty mild winters. But you still better invest in a "Yooper scooper" or a little snowblower for the occasional storms. You're pretty cenrally located a little over an hour from Marquette, 1 hour to Gwinn (we take M-35 to Esky), 2 hours to Green Bay & about 3 1/2 hours to the Copper Country. What more could you ask for!! Welcome back to da UP eh!!!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 01:29 pm:

CharlesinEsky :) Did some checking on the annual snowfall: Escanaba= 50 inches; St. Ignace= 60-80 inches; Beverly Shores IN= 50 inches. Guess we weren't too far off, eh ;)

Looks like you might be able to head north to visit Cotton and help her with all that snow shoveling she has, eh :)

I loved Deb's idea of you posting about your daily life in da UP :)

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 02:33 pm:

I don't think that was Deb's idea......

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 02:38 pm:

Deb & Steve: I thought it was one picture, too, and was trying to figure it out! Did you all see my post last night? The AAA reversed their color prediction and said THIS WEEK will be peak color in the UP! SAY IT ISN'T SO! Actually, that is a little over-generalizing when they lump the whole UP together. But they did go on to say the percentages in each area. I'm sure you can all find that on their website.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 02:42 pm:

Happy Anniversary to Mikie and Precious!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 05:11 pm:

Marsha, Makes me mad cuz I won't be there until NEXT Thursday. Oh well, hopefully we see some great color on the way UP hey?

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 05:37 pm:

Well, we are still here, and I have been able to read all those nice
notes. Thanks! The best one was the confirmation of my feeling
that Esky does not get much snow. 50 inches -- we can handle
that! Adrian averages 30. Plus we get away from the situation
here where you get all those thaws leading to slush and the
dreaded black ice. As for comments about moving back, it
sounds good if Mary will go along with my changing usernames
and such.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 06:16 pm:

Charles good luck getting moved and settled into your new life. Sounds like you will be able to do what so many of us wish we could. It's a double undertaking. What with moving AND retireing! We hope you'll be able to share some of your experiences with us wannabes. Im sure Deb didn't mean every day posting. And a hearty congratulations to Mikie and Precious for the first forty years together. Altho life has many ups & downs, things level off after these many years. God bless :>)

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 06:17 pm:

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Packers won.........finally!!!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 08:06 pm:

Yeah Packs! Yeah Michigan!

My daughter has high hopes that there will still be good color two
weeks from now. Not perfect, but good enough. Here's hoping.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:44 pm:

Go Packs!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:51 pm:

Rub it in Fran!!! Go Tigers!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 10:35 pm:
