The Quincy Mine Hoist is one of those landmarks that almost everyone who has visited the Keweenaw will recognize and identify. It's one of the first things you see up on Quincy Hill when you're checking out the view from the Houghton side of the bridge. Paul Trautman took this autumn shot from a slight angle, giving viewers a different perspective of the building, as it rises above the coloring trees on the hillside.

One of my favorite sights! Hope all of the leaf lookers have a
splendid time in the Keweenaw.

It's not as nice a sight as it used to be looking down. Too many trees in the way. The trees need to be cut down some along the scenic routes. When I was younger the scenery was much better. Now there are many places that you can't even see the water for the trees. Trees can be recycled.

I think that I shall never see A poem as lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungrey mouth is Prest against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, and lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that in summer wear a nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree. Joyce Kilmer

A recent rainy day was a good time to take a visitor on the Quincy Mine tour. The Quincy folks commented that they'd had very good attendance this season, after a slow start in June. Great news!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - 12:04 pm:

When I worked at Quincy, it didnt really seem to matter whether it was rainy or sunny, there was always a steady stream of people wanting a tour. I can tell you Bill that it never really picked up until usually after the 4th anyways. The time between 4th of July weekend and Labor Day was always when things got hopping around there. I remember spending many a 12 hour day giving tours during the summer......

Langoman: yes, thought of that seeing today's picture, but couldn't quote it as you have.

Long live nature's beauties!

Langoman - you, today's and yesterday's picture, and Ms Kilmer have brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thank you.

I just returned from the Keweenaw last night after a 2-day spur-of-
the-moment visit. I'd never been there in the Fall before, and it was
just gorgeous. While I don't think I'll be buying the house I went to
look at, I WILL be back to buy one some day!!

By clinton drake (Clint) on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - 02:23 pm:

Langoman,

My grandmother used to tell me that poem as a child and I could not find it anywhere online. Thanks for posting it along with the author and ending the mystery.

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - 02:57 pm:

Afternoon All.
Ypsilisa-- Sorry to hear that you couldn't get the house, although two days is pretty short for a trip to the CC. Will be leaving this Fri. for a weeks stay and have a folder of homes to look at from Chassel to Mohawk and all points in between. May not buy at this time either but will at least have a first hand look at what is available. The web-sites have been instrumental in providing a wealth of information.
Enjoy the day everyone!!

Just had to add that Joyce Kilmer was a man.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - 10:10 pm:

See Wikipedia: Mr. Alfred Joyce Kilmer.
The reference includes the poem "Trees".

By Kkfromsd (Kkfromsd) on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - 10:45 pm:

We are taking a trip there in a week. I can hardly wait. Are the leaves at their peak yet?? Hope it waits for one more week. :)
