The demolition derby, year after year, is one of the most popular events at the Houghton Country Fair. It looks like a little strategy is taking place in front of the 1-Z car. Only one car will be left moving at the end of the afternoon.

Where was the fire that LLB was called out to yesterday? The smoke can be smelled this morning.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 09:25 am:

At our local county fair each August, they have demo derbies on Mondays and Saturday. We go to the fair but never the demos. What youthful, useless waste of effort! :0) But some of our kids stand in line for hours to buy tickets for the good seating. Me, I'd rather check out the chickens, cattle or canned goods. Couldn't be we're old fuddy duddys hey?

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 09:32 am:

Here in Iowa there are combine demo derbys, awkward old dinosours crashing into one another, a real "hoot" to watch!

For a minute there, I tho't we had a live BridgeCam. I guess we did briefly at 9:44 this morning. Surely is a pretty day UP there.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 11:39 am:

I can't imagine the combines move very fast. What, the derby's last about a week or so?? lol.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 12:11 pm:

Capt. Paul- you made me LOL.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 03:31 pm:

Mr. Bill: I found this on the TV6 Website:
A wildfire in Lac La Belle has several departments and the DNR involved. It's a small stubborn fire on the south side of the lake. The story tonight on your TV6 News Extra.

Maybe that is the smoke smell???

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 05:11 pm:

On 696 there is a demolition derby every rush hour. Kind of reminds me of being in Texas during a twister.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 05:36 pm:

Capt.Paul, they use the road gear in those beasts, when dad was alive, I did a lot of the combining on the farm, I could get the McCormick 7500 going down the road from field to field at 30 m.p.h., that's moving for one of those!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 07:04 pm:

30 MPH??? What kind of fuel were you burning, jet fuel?? That's scarey fast for a combine!!! I'll remember that the next time I'm in Iowa......

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 07:31 pm:

does one of them combining thingies get better mileage than my 1994 Suburban? The Sub isn't a vehicle for the suburbs anymore...was it ever? LOL

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 07:41 pm:

LOL! Capt.Paul, just a diesel combine, with air cond., am-fm cassette radio. Yes it was scary, until you got used to driving it, because of the front-end (with either the corn or bean head on) heaviness of them, always felt like it was going to nose-dive. At night trying to go to sleep I often felt like I had been in a boat in rough water all day long! It was a Massey Ferguson 7500 not a McCormick, had a senior moment there.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 08:56 pm:

Don't feel bad, Davesou, we have an Expedition! That thing gets about 16 mph I swear. To fill it is nearly a $100 bill if it's down near "E". Can't trade it in cuz it has no value anymore. Oh well!

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 09:00 pm:

No kidding Mikie about the 696! You have to be doing at least 80 or the cars are right on your bumper. I avoid it during rush hour. The main roads go much quicker. No point in sitting in a parking lot. It's 80mph or not moving at all.

By Carole (Carole) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 09:55 pm:

Use to take I696 everyday going to Southfield and back. One sort of gets used to it, even going 80 mph, but since I retired 3 1/2 years ago, I don't miss it. I have a part time job in Pontiac and have since moved to Holly so I take I75 for part of the way and then Dixie Highway to where I work. Sure is a different pace, not to mention scenery. It is a joy to drive this route and enjoy the trip and not have cars riding your bumper when your are going at least 80 mph.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Friday, September 1, 2006 - 08:29 am:

Carol:
I696 is Michigan's Autobahn! I refuse to drive on it. People drive crazy and I75 drivers are getting just as bad now. People, slow down some, whats the hurry!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, September 1, 2006 - 03:27 pm:

Unfortunatly if you slow down you will be rear ended and it is safer to keep up with the traffic then to impede traffic and risk the chance of being in an accident.
