This shot, taken eight years ago, looks south toward the channel at Bete Gris. Lake Superior Land Company had just donated this stretch of beach for use as a park.

We're busy getting ready to make our famous bean soup (Michigan navy beans) at the Aura Jamboree Saturday! My husband will start the soup at about 6:00 a.m. and I'll show up around noon or so. We make it in an old 55-gallon pot. I hope the weather is not too hot while we're stirring and serving the boiling soup. This is at the Aura Community Hall. Saturday's hours are 10 a.m. until midnight, with the "old-time dance" at 8:00 p.m. Sounds like Whitewater will be there, and music all over the grounds and indoors. You've never experienced anything like it! I should've hunted up a Jamboree picture in my gallery. If you come, introduce yourself to me!

Marsha, sounds like lots of fun to be had at the Aura Jamboree. Hope you have a great turnout and a wonderful time. Wish I could be there.

A 55 gallon pot of bean soup!! Wow, that could start a whole lot of conversation in of itself ;-)

I bet it's super delicious though!! Where do you get Michigan Navy beans Marsha?? Or, where do they grow them in Michigan??

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Monday, July 10, 2006 - 03:09 pm:

Marsha,
Now that is music to my ears. I will see you there. We have a bunch headed to Aura for the day.

BTW, this soup is wonderful. Very hot...very good. It is the first thing we do upon arrival at the jamboree. Fill our bellies with soup.

If I am not mistaken, I think navy beans are grown in the Thumb
area and all around Saginaw Bay. That is, I think, Michigan's
number one agricultural area with navy beans just a part of the
area's produce.

By upmama (Upmama) on Monday, July 10, 2006 - 04:45 pm:

Maybe we could have a bean fest poetry contest...

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, July 10, 2006 - 05:44 pm:

That would be some scary poetry! We can get the beans at any local elevator and, yes, they are grown in the Saginaw Valley.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, July 10, 2006 - 06:41 pm:

it must get pretty windy around there after everyone is eating beans all day

There is a Michigan bean festival held every year in Fairgrove.

Marsha -- Wish I could have been there.
I love White Water. Sorry to have missed you
at Silver Falls. It was spectacular, as was the
Big Hole on the Falls River.
